Are you an analytical thinker who wants to do more than put ideas on paper and actually turn them into working analytics, software, automations and AI tools? Read on.
About us
McIlwain is a Queensland civil construction and infrastructure contractor. Our Technology team is building an AI-first business: practical software, analytics, AI tools and automations that make our office and operational teams more productive. That frees them to focus on what matters most, which is building our country's vital infrastructure.
About the role
This is a hands-on, end-to-end role. You'll design, develop and look after digital solutions that connect our systems, automate manual work and turn data into strategic decisions. You'll work alongside our Information Technology Manager and the wider Technology team. You'll also have plenty of opportunities to visit our projects and learn what we do, how we do it and why. That understanding is what lets you build solutions that work in the real world.
What you'll do
Build and maintain internal applications, integrations and automations, using AI-assisted development to deliver faster
Work with our AI tools and agent frameworks, including ChatGPT, Claude, the OpenAI Agents SDK and our internal AI platforms
Develop and improve analytical tools, including Power BI dashboards, semantic models, automated reporting and SQL databases
Build and maintain integrations between our systems to improve collaboration and remove double-handling
Troubleshoot application, integration and data issues
Work directly with corporate and project teams to understand their problems and build solutions they'll actually use
Visit project sites from time to time to learn more about our business and the industry
Attend industry technology events and conferences
What you'll bring
2+ years' experience building and shipping working solutions
Strong SQL skills (highly regarded)
Practical Python and React experience (highly regarded)
Sound development fundamentals: source control, APIs, debugging, testing and maintainable code
Power BI experience, or the aptitude to pick it up quickly
Curiosity about AI tools and how to use them responsibly to build better solutions
Clear communication with both technical and non-technical teams
A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, IT or similar, or equivalent experience
A current Drivers Licence
Nice to have
Microsoft Azure / Fabric, Power Apps or workflow automation experience
Experience in construction, engineering or other project-based environments
