Senior Backend Developer (PHP & SQL)

Turn the insurance world upside down as a Senior Backend Developer (PHP & SQL)

We are InShared: an online insurer that does everything just a little differently. We started as a disruptor in the Dutch insurance market and are now expanding internationally. Using smart technology, we make insurance simple, fast and fair. Our ambition? To build the best digital insurance platform in the world.

Today, we are a team of 350 people, and we're continuing to grow. To support that growth, we're looking for a Senior Backend Developer who enjoys combining hands-on development with technical ownership and wants to help modernize one of the most business-critical parts of our platform.

What will you be doing?

As a Senior Backend Developer, you will join the team responsible for InShared's financial platform. This platform powers our billing, collections and payment processes and is essential to the day-to-day operation of the business.

Together with your team, you'll be responsible for ensuring customers are billed correctly, payments are processed successfully and collection processes run smoothly. This includes integrations with payment providers and external partners such as Mollie, Buckaroo, accounting systems, collection agencies, Independer and international aggregators.

A large part of the platform has been built over many years using PHP and SQL. Many business rules and financial processes currently live within the database layer. As a result, we're looking for a developer who is comfortable not only writing application code, but also understanding, maintaining and improving complex SQL logic.

You'll help keep our existing platform reliable while contributing to the long-term roadmap to modernize and simplify the architecture. This is not a lift-and-shift migration. Our billing and collections platform processes millions of euros and supports critical monthly business operations, which means modernization will happen gradually over the coming years.

Besides developing new functionality, you'll also:

• Take ownership of business-critical financial processes

• Analyse and resolve production incidents

• Support service desk tickets when needed

• Improve integrations with internal and external systems

• Contribute to architectural improvements and technical modernization

• Help us move towards a more modern CI/CD and Continuous Delivery approach

We all benefit. And so will you!

Besides the opportunity to help shape the future of insurance, we offer you a salary between € 60.000 and €80.000 per year (including vacation allowance). But working at InShared comes with even more benefits:

• 31 paid holidays (full-time employment) and the option to exchange extra leave

• A workspace in our office villa surrounded by nature

• A fully equipped home office (€1,000 every 5 years)

• Monthly internet and remote work allowance

• A good pension plan, including a solid partner and survivor’s pension

• Travel allowance of €0.23 per kilometer (from 10 km to 75 km one way) or an NS Business Card with OV-bike

• Personal development budget of €750 per year - saving up is allowed! (max 3 years)

• Well-being budget of €200 per year

• And much more...

What do you bring?

• Extensive experience developing applications in PHP

• Strong SQL programming skills and experience working with complex database logic

• The ability to read, understand and improve existing SQL functions, procedures and business rules

• Experience with at least one modern PHP framework such as Laravel or Symfony

• A pragmatic mindset and willingness to work in both legacy and modern environments

• Ownership and a strong sense of responsibility for business-critical systems

• Experience with CI/CD, cloud platforms or platform modernization is a plus

• Experience within financial services is a plus, but certainly not required

• Excellent communication skills in English

Most importantly, we are looking for someone who enjoys learning, likes taking responsibility and gets energy from solving complex technical and business challenges.
