Junior/Intermediate Software Developer

Salary: $65,000 – $79,000 per year

Build software that makes a real difference

Gun City is expanding its IT team and looking for a junior to intermediate software developer who enjoys solving real problems and building practical solutions.

Our software powers a nationwide business. From our bespoke ERP and upcoming point-of-sale platform to inventory, logistics, e-commerce, integrations and internal tools, the software you build will be used every day and have an immediate, measurable impact.

This is a broad software development role that goes beyond a conventional full-stack position. You’ll work across web and desktop applications, databases, APIs, business systems and automation, contributing to entire projects from initial idea through to deployment and ongoing improvement.

Why this role is different

You’ll work directly with the people who use the systems you build, allowing you to understand real business problems and see the results of your work quickly.

No two weeks are quite the same. Reporting directly to the Software Team Lead, you'll become part of a collaborative IT team where six dedicated software developers—including the CTO and Software Team Lead—work closely together to design, build, and improve the systems that power our business. You'll be surrounded by experienced developers who are passionate about mentoring, sharing knowledge, and helping you succeed.

Your ideas and creativity will be valued, and you’ll have opportunities to influence technical decisions. You’ll learn from experienced developers while steadily taking on greater responsibility and ownership as your skills grow. If you see a better way of doing something, we want to hear it.

What you’ll be working on

Your work will include:

• Helping design and build our new point-of-sale platform, giving you the opportunity to contribute to a substantial new system from an early stage
• Developing new features for JARVIS, our bespoke ERP solution
• Building internal tools that improve business efficiency
• Enhancing inventory, freight and logistics systems
• Developing web integrations and REST APIs
• Modernising established, business-critical applications and progressively reducing technical debt
• Maintaining and improving existing systems
• Investigating issues and troubleshooting when required
• Reviewing, testing and documenting code
• Researching and implementing new technologies
• Using AI-assisted development tools to improve productivity, code quality, testing, troubleshooting and documentation

Our technology environment

You don’t need to know everything on these lists. Strong development fundamentals, curiosity and the ability to learn are more important than having previously worked with our exact stack.

Core technologies

• PHP
• JavaScript, HTML and CSS
• MySQL
• C#, .NET and WPF
• REST APIs and third-party integrations

Other technologies and tools

• Laravel and Vue.js
• Python
• Linux, NGINX and Docker
• Git and Bitbucket
• Jira and the wider Atlassian suite
• Bitbucket Pipelines and CI/CD workflows
• AI-assisted software development tools

AI-assisted development

We consider AI an important part of modern software development. We’re particularly interested in someone who already uses AI tools or is enthusiastic about learning to use them to develop, troubleshoot, review, test and document software more effectively, and to explore smarter solutions for the business.

You’ll still need sound programming fundamentals and the judgement to understand, validate and take responsibility for the code you produce.

What we’re looking for

This role would suit either a capable junior developer ready to grow or an intermediate developer looking for greater variety and ownership.

Ideally, you’ll bring:

• Approximately 1 to 5 years of commercial software development experience
• A relevant degree or diploma in software development, computer science or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience
• Experience with at least some of our core technologies
• A genuine enthusiasm for software development and problem-solving
• A sound understanding of Git and collaborative development workflows
• Good coding, testing and documentation practices
• Curiosity and a desire to keep learning
• Clear written and verbal communication
• Attention to detail
• The ability to work constructively as part of a team
• A positive attitude and willingness to ask questions
• An interest in using AI effectively and responsibly within software development
• The right to work in New Zealand

Links to a portfolio, GitHub profile, side projects, open-source contributions or other examples of relevant work are welcome but not required.

What you’ll gain

• Mentoring and support from experienced developers
• Hands-on experience with large, business-critical systems
• The opportunity to help shape and build a new point-of-sale platform
• Exposure to web, desktop, database, integration and infrastructure projects
• Modern development and AI-assisted coding tools
• Opportunities to learn new technologies and influence technical decisions
• Increasing project ownership as your experience grows
• Ongoing on-the-job training and annual performance and development reviews
• Career progression within a well-established New Zealand-owned company
• Staff purchasing benefits
• Free access to an Audible personal-development programme
• Monthly team BBQs
• An office arcade machine and free fruit
• Optional group fitness sessions and a monthly stretching class with a personal trainer
