Intermediate Software Developer – AI & Product Development

Salary: $90,000 – $115,000 per year

About us

We’re an entrepreneurial New Zealand company entering an exciting new phase. Building on our existing experience and customer relationships, we’re pivoting towards designing, developing and selling our own software products.

AI will be central to that journey—not as a buzzword, but as a practical tool for creating useful products, accelerating development and solving genuine customer problems.

We’re looking for an Intermediate Software Developer who wants to help shape what we build and how we build it. This is an opportunity to join early, influence product direction and grow alongside the business.

The role

You’ll work across the product development lifecycle, turning ideas and customer needs into reliable, commercially viable software. You’ll collaborate closely with company leadership and other technical and commercial contributors.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Designing, building, testing and maintaining web-based software products

• Developing AI-enabled features using large language models and related technologies

• Integrating third-party APIs, cloud services and business systems

• Creating prototypes and validating product ideas quickly

• Contributing to technical architecture and technology choices

• Improving development practices, automation, testing and deployment

• Translating customer feedback into practical product improvements

• Considering usability, security, performance and commercial value in your work

• Keeping up with developments in AI and identifying where they can deliver real value

As part of a growing product-focused business, you’ll have variety, autonomy and direct visibility of how your work affects customers and company results.

What we’re looking for

You’re a capable developer who can work independently while knowing when to ask questions or involve others. You enjoy learning, experimenting and turning ambiguous ideas into working solutions.

Ideally, you’ll bring:

• Around 3–5 years of professional software development experience

• Strong Understanding of SOLID principles

• Strong skills in at least one modern programming language or application stack

• Experience building web applications, APIs and database-backed systems

• A sound understanding of software design, testing, version control and deployment

• Practical experience using AI-assisted development for reliable rapid development

• Experience integrating generative AI or large language model APIs into applications

• An understanding of concepts such as prompting, structured outputs, retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings, tool use and model evaluation

• The ability to assess AI output for quality, reliability, privacy, security and cost

• Clear communication and a collaborative, pragmatic approach

• The right to work in New Zealand

Experience with cloud platforms, CI/CD, containers, TypeScript, Python or modern frontend frameworks would be valuable, but we’re more interested in your overall capability and potential than a perfect technology match.

You’ll thrive here if you:

• Want to help build products, not simply complete assigned tickets

• Are commercially curious and interested in why customers will buy and use a product

• Enjoy the pace and variety of an entrepreneurial environment

• Are comfortable working with evolving requirements and testing assumptions

• Take ownership while remaining open to feedback

• See AI as a powerful engineering capability that still requires thoughtful human judgement

• Want to have a meaningful influence on a company’s product direction

What we offer

• A genuine opportunity to help shape a new software product business

• Direct involvement in product, technology and commercial decisions

• Interesting work with modern AI and software technologies

• Autonomy, responsibility and room to experiment

• Support for professional development and continued learning

• Flexible or hybrid working arrangements

• The opportunity to grow into a senior or product leadership position as the business develops

How to apply

Please apply with your CV and a short introduction explaining:

• Why this opportunity interests you

• A software product or feature you’re proud of building

• How you’ve used AI in development or within a customer-facing product

Links to relevant projects, GitHub repositories or a portfolio are welcome but not required.

We value diverse backgrounds and perspectives. If the role interests you but you don’t meet every listed requirement, we still encourage you to apply.
