We've Got Your Back — and We Want Someone Who's Got Ours
Business IT is a Christchurch-based Managed Service Provider and Managed Security Service Provider, supporting businesses across New Zealand and Australia since 2003. Security isn't an add-on for us — it's built into every environment we manage, aligned to recognised standards like SMB1001, and treated as core to the job rather than optional extra work. What our clients tell us they notice most is our commitment to finding a solution, not just a fix — getting to the root cause, documenting it properly, and making sure it doesn't happen again. That's why clients who've been with us for 10, even 20 years say the same thing: they trust us because we take ownership and follow through.
That kind of trust doesn't happen by accident. It's baked into how we work: People First. Own It. Keep Improving. Make IT Simple. Better Together. If those sound like buzzwords to you, this probably isn't the role. If they sound like how you already operate, keep reading.
The Role
We're after an experienced Systems Engineer who wants more than a queue of tickets — someone who wants to own outcomes across cloud, security, infrastructure, and project delivery, and be trusted to make the calls that go with that.
Day to day, you'll be:
● Resolving complex Level 2/3 issues — the ones that need real troubleshooting, not a script
● Delivering infrastructure, Microsoft 365, Azure, and cybersecurity projects
● Administering M365, Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams, Intune, and Entra ID
● Implementing and managing security solutions across client environments
● Running upgrades, migrations, and change management properly — not just quickly
● Working directly with clients to understand what they actually need, not just what they asked for
● Spotting security risks and helping clients fix them before they become incidents
● Writing documentation that the next person can actually use
● Mentoring less experienced engineers when they need a hand
● Sharing the on-call roster and scheduled maintenance work
What Good Looks Like Here
We hold everyone — including ourselves — to a standard, not just a job description. In this role, that means:
● You escalate risks early, rather than hoping they resolve themselves
● You document as you go, so the next engineer isn't starting from zero
● You communicate before someone has to chase you, especially when a deadline's at risk
● You take the win-together approach — sharing knowledge, asking for help, and not hoarding the tricky fixes for yourself
● You challenge inefficient processes constructively, instead of just working around them
Where AI Fits In
AI is part of how we work here, not a slide in a strategy deck. Tickets arrive pre-triaged, with the device and client context already pulled together, and an AI agent qualifies inbound support calls before a technician even answers. The point isn't fewer engineers — it's engineers who aren't burning their day on the repetitive parts. We do the same for clients, helping them adopt AI properly across their own businesses — with the right guardrails around data, security, and usage policy — rather than just switching something on and hoping for the best. You'll work with these tools from day one and help shape how they develop.
What You'll Bring
● Solid experience as a Systems Engineer, Infrastructure Engineer, or senior technical support role
● MSP experience (this matters — the pace and variety here rewards it)
● Strong Microsoft 365 administration skills and Azure experience
● Working knowledge of Intune, Entra ID, and modern device management
● Strong cybersecurity best-practice experience
● Confident troubleshooting across Microsoft server, desktop, networking, and cloud
● Genuinely good communication — you can talk to a stressed client without jargon and without condescension
● A full New Zealand driver's licence
Extra certifications and security-focused experience will be viewed favourably — but attitude and ownership matter just as much as the checklist.
What You'll Get
● Competitive salary based on experience
● Fully funded training and certifications
● Exposure to modern Microsoft cloud, security, and AI technologies — not legacy patch-and-pray
● Genuine variety — different clients, different problems, different projects
● Real career progression, not just a title change
● A team that actually backs each other up
● The chance to influence outcomes, not just execute tickets, in a business small enough that your voice counts
