This is a paid internship. Compensation for this position begins at $29.00 per hour.

Role Summary:

Quantum Signal AI (QSAI) is looking for a Software Engineering Intern – Tools and Prototypes to help develop engineering tooling and prototype software for the summer of 2027. Our applications range from specialized engineering tools to prototypes for advanced vehicle features that are used by engineers, researchers, and designers at Ford and QSAI. Interns will work alongside experienced engineers throughout the software development lifecycle and gain hands-on experience solving real engineering problems in a fast-paced R&D environment. A standout candidate will have experience in compiled languages (C++, Go, etc.), scripting languages (Python, JavaScript, etc.), web development, and software projects outside of an academic setting. We value the ability to quickly learn new technology to meet changing requirements, so a desire to learn is important!

Location:

Saline, Michigan (In-person). Our “historic schoolhouse” office supports hands-on collaboration, mentorship, and real-time problem solving.

What You’ll Do (Essential Functions):

• Contribute to projects across the full Software Development Lifecycle, from design and implementation, to testing and release management
• Collaborate within varied project teams to develop tooling to improve engineering workflows
• Translate ideas, specifications, and/or requirements into high-quality implementations
• Tackle the challenges of learning, integrating, and leveraging a range of software tools and technologies as needed
• Develop documentation for software, processes, and projects
• Create and maintain build processes and CI/CD pipelines

What You’ll Bring (Minimum Requirements):

• Current enrollment in an undergraduate degree-seeking program, pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field
• Maintaining student status for the entire duration of the internship, including the academic term immediately following the internship
• Strong understanding of computer science fundamentals including data structures, algorithms, object-oriented programming, debugging, networking, and file systems
• Previous work/internship or academic club experience developing software
• Proficiency developing software in a compiled language (C++, Go, etc.)
• Experience with scripting languages (Python, JavaScript, etc.)
• Experience working in both Linux- and Windows-based environments
• Familiarity with web development (HTML, CSS, JS, etc.)

Bonus Points For:

• Coursework or equivalent experience in operating systems, databases, compilers, concurrency, and other high level computer science topics
• Experience with REST APIs, either through integrating with existing APIs or designing APIs for downstream consumers
• Experience with modern web development frameworks and technologies (Node.js, React, Typescript, Flask, etc.)
• Experience with cloud-based development/deployment via GCP or equivalent cloud provider
• Experience integrating Identity and Access Management (IAM) solutions into an application (Microsoft Entra, RBAC, MSAL, authentication and authorization APIs)

You may not check every box, or your experience may look a little different from what we've outlined, but if you are excited about this role and think you can bring value to Quantum Signal AI, we encourage you to apply!

What You’ll Get:

• A relaxed, fun community and environment in which to solve interesting problems
• Opportunity to participate in a 401(k) savings plan
• Ford AX-Plan vehicle discounts
• Mentorship-focused learning that emphasizes engineering fundamentals, hands-on problem solving, and understanding the underlying principles behind the systems we build.
• Other perks to fuel creativity such as an on-site gymnasium, free drinks and snacks, and a variety of optional team activities

About QSAI:

Founded in 1999, Quantum Signal grew up developing intelligent algorithms and AI. As our engineering R&D services expanded, we later sharpened our focus on applications and technology related to mobility, sensing, perception, autonomy, and simulation. In 2019 we became Quantum Signal AI, a subsidiary of Ford Motor developing technologies to advance their R&D efforts. We build solutions to enhance the capability, robustness, safety, and acceptance of intelligent ground vehicles in an effort to make transportation more effective and efficient for all.

While AI is part of our name, our internship program emphasizes building fundamental engineering knowledge, analytical thinking, and practical problem-solving skills. We want interns to understand how and why systems work through hands-on experience, mentorship, and experimentation, rather than simply relying on tools to provide answers.

Our HQ in the historic Union School in Saline, MI is the perfect playground to develop this cutting-edge technology and we’re always looking for smart folks who like new challenges, learning new skills, and technical variety.
