Software Engineering Intern - Agent Operations (Waterford/Dublin office, Ireland)

Are you ready to join a game-changing open-source AI platform that harnesses the power of hybrid cloud to drive innovation?

The Agent Operations team within Red Hat AI (RHAI) is looking for a Software Engineer Intern to join us in Ireland. Our team builds the infrastructure that allows AI agents to run securely and reliably on Kubernetes and OpenShift, including the OpenShell project, an open-source platform for agent orchestration, identity, and sandboxing. This is an opportunity to work at the intersection of AI, cloud-native infrastructure, and security, contributing to technology that defines how autonomous agents are deployed, governed, and trusted in production.

At Red Hat, you’ll work in an environment that welcomes diverse perspectives, values great ideas, and empowers individuals to contribute meaningfully. Freedom and courage are two of our core values — which means you’ll have the space to take risks, explore the unknown, and grow your strengths. But being a Red Hatter is not just about bravery; it’s also about commitment and follow-through.

Red Hat’s Intern Program is a collaborative effort between the Emerging Talent team and our intern managers. The program is designed to offer a meaningful and well-rounded experience — combining professional development, networking opportunities, social engagement, and impactful work. This is a paid, full-time internship based in the Waterford or Dublin office, with flexible working hours. The expected start date is January 2027.

What you will do:

• Perform engineering tasks under the direction of an experienced engineer

• Become an active member of an agile development team, both scrum and kanban

• Learn to collaborate and innovate with other engineers in your team

• Troubleshoot technical issues and help deliver creative solutions

• Work both on your own, remotely, and collaboratively with others in your team

• Help mentor a transition year student, transferring your learned skills to the younger students

• Contribute to the open-source community

• Present a topic, not always technical, to the Cloud Services team at one or more of our Lunch & Learn events

• Proactively utilize AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code) for code generation, auto-completion, and intelligent suggestions to accelerate development cycles and enhance code quality.

What you will bring:

• You must be enrolled in an accredited university program in the Republic of Ireland during the full duration of the internship and must be able to join us full time from January till August 2027

• Working knowledge of written and spoken English

• Growth mindset; willingness to learn and challenge yourself

• Ability to give and receive feedback in a meaningful manner

• Passion for problem-solving and debugging technical issues

• Some working knowledge/understanding of Git usage and workflows (Git workshops are provided for all interns when they join).

• A good understanding of scripting and programming with languages such Python, Golang, Rust

• A basic understanding or knowledge of Linux operating systems

• Some understanding of configuration management, automation tools, and containerisation technologies.

• Active online presence (e.g. GitHub) with interest in community development is a plus.

Due to the limited number of internship opportunities and the high volume of applications, we may not be able to speak with every candidate. To maximize your chances of moving forward in the process, please ensure your CV clearly outlines your education, relevant projects (link to your git.hub account), and extracurricular activities.

Please apply for a maximum of three internship roles that best match your interests and skills.
