Software Engineer

The Company

PayPal has been revolutionizing commerce globally for more than 25 years. Creating innovative experiences that make moving money, selling, and shopping simple, personalized, and secure, PayPal empowers consumers and businesses in approximately 200 markets to join and thrive in the global economy.

We operate a global, two-sided network at scale that connects hundreds of millions of merchants and consumers. We help merchants and consumers connect, transact, and complete payments, whether they are online or in person. PayPal is more than a connection to third-party payment networks. We provide proprietary payment solutions accepted by merchants that enable the completion of payments on our platform on behalf of our customers.

We offer our customers the flexibility to use their accounts to purchase and receive payments for goods and services, as well as the ability to transfer and withdraw funds. We enable consumers to exchange funds more safely with merchants using a variety of funding sources, which may include a bank account, a PayPal or Venmo account balance, PayPal and Venmo branded credit products, a credit card, a debit card, certain cryptocurrencies, or other stored value products such as gift cards, and eligible credit card rewards. Our PayPal, Venmo, and Xoom products also make it safer and simpler for friends and family to transfer funds to each other. We offer merchants an end-to-end payments solution that provides authorization and settlement capabilities, as well as instant access to funds and payouts. We also help merchants connect with their customers, process exchanges and returns, and manage risk. We enable consumers to engage in cross-border shopping and merchants to extend their global reach while reducing the complexity and friction involved in enabling cross-border trade.

Our beliefs are the foundation for how we conduct business every day. We live each day guided by our core values of Inclusion, Innovation, Collaboration, and Wellness. Together, our values ensure that we work together as one global team with our customers at the center of everything we do – and they push us to ensure we take care of ourselves, each other, and our communities.

Job Summary:

Merchant onboarding is one of the most complex problems at PayPal. It spans 200+ markets, 15 banking licenses, 40+ products, and more than 200,000 combinations of country, product, license, and data-field requirements — each with local risk, compliance, tax, and legal nuances. Our mission is to make that complexity invisible: to merchants, to partners, and to the engineers who build on our platform.

Our team owns the partner onboarding and experience domain within PayPal’s Payment Services & Crypto Engineering organization. We build and operate the platforms that bring merchants and partners onto PayPal and serve them across their entire lifecycle — from first sign-up through the day-to-day work of running their business.

What We Build

Enhanced Onboarding Platform

A next-generation platform that consolidates every onboarding path — direct/organic, connected-path (Integrated Signup), and managed-path (Multi-Account Management) — onto a single, consistent set of rails. EOP replaces flow-by-flow, hard-wired experiences with dynamic, just-in-time UI driven by downstream risk and compliance requirements. Business logic is centralized in a server-side orchestration mid-tier (Merchant Onboarding Management), keeping front-end experiences lightweight. The platform supports web, mobile, API, and webhook integration models and integrates in real time with the Salesforce CRM platform to onboard high-value merchants and partners.

Merchant Servicing Platform

The platform that supports merchants once they are live — wallet, profile, settings, preferences, configuration, and transaction history. We are extending servicing beyond the UI to offer APIs and webhooks as first-class servicing experiences, especially for partners managing merchants on their own platforms, across all merchant segments from SMB through Large Enterprise.

Role Summary

We are looking for a Software Engineer with 3+ years of experience to help design, build, and scale the microservices, APIs, and data pipelines behind our onboarding and servicing platforms. You will write high-quality Java code, build resilient RESTful services and batch workflows on the Spring ecosystem, and collaborate with product and cross-functional partners to deliver features that thousands of merchants and partners depend on every day.

Key Responsibilities

Software Development

• Write and maintain clean, efficient, and scalable code primarily in Java and Scala for data pipelines and microservices.
• Implement microservices architecture, ensuring modularity, scalability, and maintainability.
• Conduct rigorous code reviews and debugging, and develop automated tests to verify software functionality and performance.
• Develop and maintain RESTful APIs, Java services, and batch processing jobs using the Spring Framework (including Spring MVC and Spring Boot/Batch where applicable) to support scalable enterprise applications.

Collaboration and Integration

• Participate actively in agile development processes, including code reviews, daily stand-ups, and design discussions.
• Adhere to software engineering best practices such as version control and continuous integration/deployment.

Skills and Qualifications

Technical Skills

• Proficient in the Java programming language with a solid grasp of software development principles.
• Familiarity with core computer science concepts such as data structures, algorithms, software design principles, object-oriented programming, and relational database concepts.
• Knowledge of building and optimizing data storage solutions and managing cloud infrastructure for high availability and performance.
• Proficient in Java and the Spring ecosystem, with experience building REST APIs, web services, scalable microservices, and batch workflows.
• Familiarity with programming for data processing and automation to complement Java-based Spring applications.
• Familiarity with developing automated tests to ensure software functionality and performance.
• Ability to design, develop, and manage automated workflows for seamless data orchestration.

Analytical and Collaboration Skills

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
• Effective communication and collaboration abilities to work with cross-functional teams, including product teams.

Why Join Us

You will build distributed systems with real scale and real stakes — orchestration across PayPal’s core platforms (risk, compliance, identity, and growth), event-driven and batch processing, and API and webhook design. You will see first-hand how strong architecture reduces time-to-market, cuts defects, and improves developer productivity, working alongside engineers and product partners who care deeply about building reusable platform rails rather than one-off flows..
