Software Engineer - Imaging Systems at Verkada – San Mateo | Jobyssey

Who We Are

Verkada is transforming how organizations protect their people and places with an integrated, privacy-sensitive AI-powered platform that includes solutions for video security, access control, air quality sensors, alarms, intercoms, and visitor management.

We’ve got serious momentum in the market: more than 30,000 customers (including 100+ of the Fortune 500), a $5.8B valuation, more than $1 billion in annualized bookings, and backing from CapitalG, Sequoia Capital, General Catalyst, Felicis Ventures, Next47 and more. Physical AI is one of the most consequential technology shifts of our time, and Verkada is at the center of it.

You can look at all kinds of communities to see our platform’s impact in the world. It's the retailer that uses our agentic AI to deter theft before it happens. The warehouse that uses AI-powered alerts to make sure its team is protected on the floor with proper PPE. The school that’s alerted to a threat in real-time and triggers a lockdown in seconds, not minutes. We’re rapidly scaling this impact: today, more than 2 million Verkada devices are deployed across 170+ countries.

About the Role

We’re looking for an embedded software engineer passionate about the full camera stack to help build a best-in-class imaging system. In this role, you will design and implement core imaging system components and algorithms—including autofocus, auto-exposure, image quality, and system stability—while partnering closely with hardware and computer vision teams to push the boundaries of camera performance. You will evaluate system behavior through lab and field testing, deliver data-driven insights, and contribute to features that define our next-generation camera capabilities. This is a high-impact, hands-on role for someone excited to shape the future of camera systems.

What You'll Do

Design and implement camera software across the imaging stack (e.g., 3A algorithms, camera pipeline configuration, sensor drivers) primarily in C++ and C.
Build and scale internal tools for image system tuning and automated diagnostics to enable precise image quality optimization and proactive detection of system-level imaging anomalies.
Collaborate with hardware, firmware, and computer vision teams to integrate and validate end-to-end system stability and image performance.
Collaborate with external vendors on IQ tuning and refine results to meet product performance targets
Analyze system metrics and imaging data to deliver data-driven features and continuous performance improvements .

What You Bring

BS/MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field.
3+ years of software development experience, with a strong foundation in systems programming.
Proficiency in C++.
Strong problem-solving skills and a proven ability to learn quickly and work independently.
Excellent communication and documentation skills; comfortable collaborating across cross-functional teams.
Must be willing and able to work onsite five days per week

Nice to Have

Working knowledge of optics, image sensors, ISP algorithms, and SDK integration for imaging components.
Deep understanding of digital camera systems, such as auto exposure, auto focus, auto white balance, WDR (Wide Dynamic Range), day/night transition and so on.
Ability to detect and triage imaging artifacts and system faults across the hardware-software boundary (e.g., sensor artifacts, mechanical malfunctions, or ISP stability).
Background in developing on-device software for IoT systems or embedded Linux environments.
Ability to evaluate image quality both objectively and subjectively, including noise, sharpness, color accuracy, and overall visual performance.
