AI-First Engineering at Mimecast

Mimecast is an AI-First engineering organization. Our teams actively leverage AI-powered development tools across all facets of engineering, from code development to testing, documentation, and operations. We're looking for leaders who don't just use AI tools but champion their adoption and establish new ways of working.

Our AI leadership extends beyond how we build to what we build. Our Mihra AI agent delivers 7x faster threat response for customers, and we're recognized as "Agents of Change" in Human Risk Management. Engineers here work at the intersection of cutting-edge AI tooling and AI-powered security products that protect organizations worldwide.

The driving force behind Collaboration Security at Mimecast

Dive into the forefront of innovation with our Managed Threat Response engineering team, where we build the platforms that detect, investigate, and remediate threats on behalf of our customers. Our products leverage the latest technologies and advances in Artificial Intelligence to stay one step ahead of cybercriminals — and we build them the same way.

Why Join Our Team?

“At Mimecast we process over a billion emails and collaboration events every day, and our team is what stands between our customers and the threats hiding in that traffic. We are building an engineering team where AI is how the work gets done — not a side experiment. If you already build with agentic coding tools, and you can tell the difference between output that is fast and output that is right, you will do some of the best work of your career here.” – Hiring Manager.

What You'll Do

As a Software Engineer II you will own meaningful parts of Mailroom and Threat Portal, with contributions into our Managed Email Incident Response and Remediation products. You will work as an AI-first engineer: agentic tools are your default starting point, and your judgement is what makes their output shippable. Your responsibilities will include:

• Work through ambiguity to identify what actually needs solving, then design, build, and run the solution — the problems here are rarely fully defined when they reach you.
• Design new services and components, and migrate legacy ones, treating scalability, reliability, and observability as first-class concerns alongside functionality.
• Use agentic AI development tools as your primary working method across design, implementation, testing, refactoring, and documentation — and coach peers on using them responsibly.
• Own the quality of everything you merge, regardless of what produced it: tests, reviews, observability, and rollback paths included.
• Contribute to team-level technical thinking beyond your own tasks — propose better approaches in design review, flag systemic quality issues, and spot performance and security risks in your colleagues' work.
• Explain your technical decisions and the trade-offs behind them clearly, to engineers and non-technical stakeholders alike.
• Lead root cause analysis on production incidents that span multiple systems, implement the preventive work, and monitor resource usage for cost savings that do not compromise performance or reliability.
• Support less experienced engineers through code review, pairing, and shared context, and engage in Agile activities: backlog refinement, planning, design and code reviews, demos, and retrospectives.

What You'll Bring

We are looking for a strong engineer first. Depth in any single framework or tool matters far less to us than how you think, how fast you learn, and the quality of what you ship.

• Engineering fundamentals over tool familiarity. Sound grasp of data structures, algorithms, concurrency, API design, and testing, and the habit of thinking about reliability, performance, and security before code reaches production.
• A track record of shipping and owning. Around four or more years building production software, including components or services you owned beyond first release — you should be able to talk through what you built, what broke, and what you changed as a result.
• Proven AI-first development practice. Demonstrable day-to-day development with agentic coding tools rather than occasional autocomplete, and enough command of your own workflow to walk a colleague through it. We work in Cursor, but we care that you have built this way, not which tool you used — the habits transfer, and we expect you to pick ours up quickly.
• Critical judgement over AI output. A working understanding of where these tools fail — hallucinated APIs, plausible-but-wrong logic, silent security and performance regressions — and the discipline never to merge code you cannot explain.
• Strong proficiency in at least one modern backend language, and evidence that you have picked up others quickly. Our stack is primarily Python and Django; deep experience is welcome, but demonstrated ability to become productive fast matters more.
• Practical platform skills. Relational data modelling and query performance (PostgreSQL or similar), distributed building blocks such as caching (Redis) and search engines (Elasticsearch), containerisation, CI/CD pipelines, and foundational AWS services.
• Clear reasoning, ownership, and curiosity. You can explain not just what you did but why, you follow your work into production, you improve what you touch, and you collaborate well across a team distributed over multiple time zones.
• Nice to have: front-end experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, Angular or React; Java; prior work in cybersecurity or email security; and hands-on experience building LLM-backed application features such as retrieval, tool use, or evaluation harnesses.

What We Bring

Join our Managed Threat Response team to accelerate your career journey, working with cutting-edge technologies on projects that have real customer impact. You will be given first-class AI development tooling and the time and mandate to get genuinely good with it: we treat AI engineering capability as a skill we invest in and measure, and we judge engineers on the outcomes they ship and the quality they sustain — not on lines of code written.

Mimecast offers formal and on-the-job learning opportunities and maintains a comprehensive benefits package that helps our employees and their family members sustain a healthy lifestyle. We believe in 'growth that's good', we have 'a culture that cares' and we are on a 'mission that matters'.

Our Hybrid Model: We provide you with the flexibility to live balanced, healthy lives through our hybrid working model that champions both collaborative teamwork and individual flexibility. Employees are expected to come to the office at least two days per week, because working together in person:

• Fosters a culture of collaboration, communication, performance and learning
• Drives innovation and creativity within and between teams
