Flywire is seeking a Software Engineer II to join their StudyLink team, focusing on building and scaling admissions and payment solutions. The role involves leveraging AI-driven development tools to architect features, maintain secure code, and collaborate globally within a fintech and edtech environment.
The Opportunity:
Flywire is reimagining how software is built. We are looking for an experienced, forward-thinking Software Engineer II with rock-solid Computer Science fundamentals to join our StudyLink team.
As a leading cloud-based admissions solution used by top universities across Australia and globally, StudyLink accelerates the application process for institutions, agents, and students. By combining our admissions platform with Flywire’s global payments technology, we streamline the entire student journey from recruitment and enrollment to tuition payments and agent commissions. Our product team is driven by a passion to enable people everywhere to achieve their educational goals by building technology that improves choice and access.
You will join a fast-paced team dedicated to expanding our platform’s capabilities, speed, and scalability. A commitment to collaborative problem solving, pragmatic design, and building quality products is essential.
As an engineer at Flywire, you won't be bogged down by repetitive boilerplate. Instead, you will plug directly into our deeply integrated AI ecosystem, operating as an advanced AI-augmented developer. We provide you with premium enterprise AI tools like Claude Code, giving you the leverage to analyse complex codebases, architect new features, and modernise legacy systems at a velocity and scale that few traditional engineering environments can offer.
With AI multiplying your output, your focus elevates entirely to core software craftsmanship and architectural judgment. You will act as the critical thinker and safety rail: validating complex data structures, ensuring strict FinTech security compliance, tuning database performance, and expertly guiding AI outputs into robust, production-ready enterprise software
What You’ll Do:
AI-Driven Development: Direct AI development tools to read, analyse, refactor, and generate clean, secure, and testable code, accelerating your understanding of complex system interdependencies.
End-to-End Ownership: Design, build, and maintain high-quality, scalable features. Exercise independent judgment in selecting methods and techniques to solve complex technical bugs and production issues.
Critical Evaluation: Evaluate AI-generated solutions and peer code against real-world performance, edge cases, and object-oriented design best practices to ensure strict FinTech security, scaling, and performance requirements are never sacrificed for speed.
Global Collaboration: Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams across the globe including senior architects, product, SRE, and security to deliver reliable solutions.
Client & System Impact: Assist in the technical implementation of our product for new and existing clients, resolving complex technical requests in partnership with our application support teams.
Lifecycle Leadership: Drive change and continuous improvement across all phases of the development lifecycle, identifying, designing, and building enhancements to streamline client workflows.
What We’re Looking For:
Strong CS Fundamentals: Deep understanding of object-oriented programming (eg. Java), data structures, system architecture, and relational database design (PostgreSQL). Front end development expertise highly desirable.
API Design & Integration: Proven ability to design, build, and maintain scalable RESTful APIs, with hands-on experience securely integrating complex third-party services and external platforms (such as payment gateways).
AI Aptitude: High comfort using LLMs and AI coding assistants (e.g., Claude Code) to navigate, translate, and transform complex codebases, and to analyse issues in a code context to resolve reported issues.
Critical Code Evaluation: The engineering discipline to review AI outputs for logic flaws, security vulnerabilities, memory management issues, and scalability.
CI/CD: Experience working with CI/CD processes that incorporate automated testing, security scanning, and continuous deployment pipelines (e.g., Jenkins, GitLab CI) to ensure reliable software delivery.
Degree/Experience: Bachelor's in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience (2-5 years).
Communication: Outstanding verbal and written communication skills and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams including product, support and security.
Language: Fluent in English, as it is the company’s working language.
Bonus Experience: Experience in FinTech, EdTech or the education and payment industry will be appreciated.
Our Culture:
Global & Flexible: We are a global engineering team distributed across three continents and four countries, offering a flexible, remote-friendly environment.
Autonomy & Collaboration: We focus on shipping high-quality code and iterating quickly, without being weighed down by overly rigid processes. We expect a high degree of proactiveness and give our teams the autonomy to self-organise and drive solutions. However, autonomy does not mean working in isolation. We balance independent ownership with deep, collaborative teamwork to build the best possible product.
Continuous Learning & Growth: Growth is built into our DNA. We actively invest in your professional development through cross-discipline knowledge-sharing events, peer mentorship, and a culture that encourages safe experimentation. We expect you to stay curious, and we provide the resources and ecosystem to ensure your skills continually evolve.
