Build and operate Kubernetes-based, planetary-scale cloud infrastructure for Azure Monitor’s observability services, focusing on reliability, security, and AI-assisted operations.
Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering team is leading the transformation of analytics in the world of data with products like databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging & real-time analytics, and business intelligence. The products our portfolio include Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. Our mission is to build the data platform for the age of AI, powering a new class of data-first applications and driving a data culture.
Within the Azure Monitor team, we are looking for a Software Engineer II and Senior Software Engineer to help build and evolve the cloud-native infrastructure layer for Azure Monitor and other observability services. This role is ideal for someone who can own complex Kubernetes-based platform systems end to end, drive architecture across teams, improve reliability and security at scale, and shape how AI-assisted and AI-agentic capabilities are safely applied to infrastructure operations.
Within Microsoft Fabric, the Azure Monitor team builds services that enable customers to monitor, detect, troubleshoot, and mitigate issues with their services through an increasingly agentic experience. Azure Monitor includes Log Analytics, Application Insights, Container Insights, Hosted Prometheus, Azure Managed Grafana, and more. Additionally, Azure Monitor is the platform upon which Microsoft Sentinel is built. We have a multi-billion dollar business that is growing rapidly, and we run some of the world’s highest scale observability services both for Microsoft internally and for our external customers, processing over 1.5 Exabytes of logs daily and tracking over 100 billion active metrics.
We embrace a fast-paced, startup-like culture focused on shipping early and often, with an emphasis on attention to detail, introspection, and accountability. Collaboration is at the heart of our team. We build on each other’s ideas and empower engineers to innovate from the ground up, delivering world-class value at speed.
What we build:
- Planetary-scale, Kubernetes-based cloud infrastructure platforms for Azure Monitor workloads.
- Highly scalable, resilient microservices and operational tooling are hosted in the cloud.
- Availability of indicators, monitoring, alerting, diagnostics, and auto-mitigation capabilities.
- Secure, compliant, cost-efficient infrastructure patterns that improve reliability across Azure Monitor services.
If you’re passionate about building systems that power Azure’s observability and health at hyperscale, and thrive in an environment that values creativity, collaboration, and technical excellence, we’d love to hear from you.
We do not just value differences or different perspectives. We seek them out and invite them in so we can tap into the collective power of everyone in the company. As a result, our customers are better served.
As a member of our team, you will lead design and code reviews across feature areas and participate in all stages of our engineering lifecycle (initial research and discovery, quick iteration on promising concepts, solution prototyping and development, deployment and live site support).
Developers in the team are expected to wear multiple hats and demonstrate breadth, depth, and leadership.
You will work with multiple partner teams and deploy across all Azure regions.
This position is for someone who:
- Passionate about distributed systems and planetary scale services.
- Enjoys the challenge of designing, building and operating cloud infrastructure platform components built on Kubernetes, with a strong focus on reliability, security, networking, diagnosability, and global-scale cost efficiency.
- Drive well-scoped design and implementation work for cloud-native infrastructure used by Azure Observability services across multiple environments.
- Own production-quality features end to end, including design, coding, validation, deployment, monitoring, and live-site support.
- Improve Kubernetes-based operational patterns, including service-to-service communication, workload placement, traffic management, and resiliency practices.
- Partner with adjacent infrastructure, observability, and platform teams to align dependencies, clarify ownership, and deliver supportable solutions.
- Embody Microsoft culture and values.
