The Frontier ADC team delivers the AWS GenAI and Agentic AI service portfolio to customers in GovCloud and isolated environments. We expand Frontier AI services into new regions, automate service deployment and operations, and build solutions that meet the security, availability, and scale requirements of government customers. Our teams build and operate massively scalable distributed systems across services including Amazon Bedrock, Amazon Quick, Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, and Kiro.
We are seeking a Software Development Manager who can think big, set technical and organizational direction, and build a high-performing engineering team. This leader will simplify complex problems while ensuring our customers receive a secure, reliable, and consistent experience.
A successful Software Development Manager will lead a team responsible for building, launching, and operating Frontier AI services across GovCloud and isolated environments. They will work closely with Amazon’s largest and most demanding government customers, own the team’s technical roadmap and delivery commitments, develop engineers, and drive the resolution of complex technical and operational issues. They will partner across service teams, security, infrastructure, product, and operations to deliver solutions that address the unique requirements of these environments.
This position requires that the candidate selected must currently possess and maintain an active TS/SCI security clearance. The position further requires that, after start, the selected candidate obtain and maintain an active TS/SCI security clearance with polygraph or commensurate clearance for each government agency for which they perform AWS work.
Key job responsibilities
The ideal candidate will:
- Be great fun to work with. Our company credo is “Work hard. Have fun. Make history.” The right candidate will enjoy building teams, creating an inclusive environment, and helping engineers do the best work of their careers.
- Build and develop high-performing teams. You have experience hiring, coaching, and developing software and systems engineers. You set clear expectations, provide direct feedback, recognize strong performance, and help engineers grow into larger roles.
- Have strong technical judgment. You have experience with Linux, networking, software development, and large-scale distributed systems. You can guide architecture and design decisions, ask the right technical questions, and lead teams through complex troubleshooting and post-incident reviews.
- Deliver through others. You translate customer and business requirements into clear priorities, establish mechanisms that make progress visible, remove blockers, and hold the team accountable for delivering secure and reliable services.
- Love solving difficult problems. You will lead teams addressing complex service-build and operational challenges in GovCloud and isolated environments. You understand systems design, operations, automation, security, and process improvement.
- Think big. You will establish a strategy for building and deploying solutions across multiple services and regions. You will create mechanisms that allow the organization to scale without scaling operational effort at the same rate.
- Raise the bar. You establish strong engineering practices, guide design and operational reviews, and create a culture that values ownership, technical rigor, and continuous improvement.
A day in the life
As a Software Development Manager in Frontier ADC, you will build and lead a team that expands AWS services into GovCloud and isolated regions while improving the resiliency and operational efficiency of our existing services. You will own the team’s strategy, roadmap, staffing, execution, and operational performance. You will use customer feedback and operational data to make decisions, manage risks, and communicate progress to senior leaders and partner organizations.
You will lead the development and operation of AWS Frontier AI services that enable customers to use generative AI and agentic capabilities in secure environments. These environments create engineering challenges involving infrastructure scale, service parity, deployment automation, security compliance, and long-term operations. The Frontier ADC team resolves operational issues, automates repetitive work, builds customer solutions, executes security campaigns such as blocked-software remediation and host patching, and delivers service-parity programs.
As a Software Development Manager, you will:
- Hire, develop, and retain a high-performing team of software and systems development engineers.
- Establish the team’s technical strategy, roadmap, goals, and delivery mechanisms.
- Own service delivery and operational performance across GovCloud and isolated environments.
- Remain technically engaged through architecture reviews, design reviews, operational investigations, and critical customer escalations.
- Partner across engineering, product, security, infrastructure, recruiting, and operations organizations.
- Build constructive dialogue, reconcile competing perspectives, and drive decisions on complex or contentious issues.
- Manage priorities, dependencies, staffing, and delivery risks across multiple concurrent initiatives.
- Establish mechanisms that improve engineering quality, operational readiness, security, and service scalability.
- Communicate strategy, status, risks, and decisions clearly to engineers, partner teams, customers, and senior leaders.
- Demonstrate Customer Obsession, Ownership, Hire and Develop the Best, Invent and Simplify, Insist on the Highest Standards, and Deliver Results.
