Maple SDM Job Description
Join us in building the next generation of distributed systems and database technologies to power AWS!
About AWS
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud platform. We pioneered cloud computing and never stopped innovating — that’s why customers from the most successful startups to Global 500 companies trust our robust suite of products and services to power their businesses.
About Journal
Distributed systems such as Kinesis, S3, and DynamoDB need to durably and correctly commit customer writes at high scale and with high availability. For this, many such systems use Journal. Journal is a fault tolerant, high performance, durable log service. It offers an elegant solution to a complex, distributed systems problem. The challenges in building such a system stem with right durability, availability, resiliency, performance (microseconds matter), and scale (we commit in excess of 100 million transactions per second) at low cost.
As a Software Development Manager, you will be joining the team that builds Journal Control Plane services and automations at scale. You will be leading a team of software developers solving novel technical challenges, working with tenured Principal Engineers and Senior Software Engineers on a daily basis.
Inclusive Team Culture
Here at AWS, we embrace our differences. We are committed to furthering our culture of inclusion. We have ten employee-led affinity groups, reaching 40,000 employees in over 190 chapters globally. Amazon’s culture of inclusion is reinforced within our 14 Leadership Principles, which remind team members to seek diverse perspectives, learn and be curious, and earn trust.
Work/Life Balance
Our team puts a high value on work-life balance. It isn’t about how many hours you spend at home or at work; it’s about the flow you establish that brings energy to both parts of your life. We believe striking the right balance between your personal and professional life is critical to life-long happiness and fulfillment. We offer flexibility in working hours and encourage you to find your own balance between your work and personal lives. This position involves on-call responsibilities, typically for one week every two months. We don’t like getting paged in the middle of the night or on the weekend, so we work to ensure that our systems are fault tolerant. When we do get paged, we work together to resolve the root cause.
Mentorship & Career Growth
Our team is dedicated to supporting new members. We have a broad mix of experience levels and tenures, and we’re building an environment that celebrates knowledge sharing and mentorship. We care about your career growth and strive to enable opportunities based on what will help each team member develop into a better-rounded employee and enable them to take on more complex tasks in the future.
Key job responsibilities
Your responsibilities include:
* Own the delivery of software development projects end-to-end.
* Define your team's roadmap and manage the ongoing projects, keeping customers informed, update senior management, and represent the team to their dependencies.
* Work with the engineers in your team to invent, design, and develop highly available and scalable distributed systems and database technologies.
* Work with your team, your peers, senior management, and senior engineers to implement best practices in software development and operational processes.
* Develop and grow the members of your team, as well as mentoring others.
* Keep up to date with new technologies used in the field and by our customers, to stay current in our rapidly changing environment.
