Software Development Engineer II, CloudWatch Collectors

Description

Come and build the future with us as we change the way the world sees the Cloud!

Description

Come and build the future with us as we change the Cloud!

CloudWatch is the observability platform of AWS, built for developers, system operators, site reliability engineers (SRE), and IT managers. CloudWatch collects monitoring and operational data in the form of logs, metrics, and events, providing a unified view of AWS resources, applications and services that run on AWS, and on-premises servers. Customers use CloudWatch to set high resolution alarms, visualise logs and metrics side by side, take automated actions, troubleshoot issues, and discover insights to optimise their applications, and ensure they are running smoothly. The CloudWatch team in Dublin is growing and we are looking for exceptional software development engineers to create the next generation CloudWatch experience.

CloudWatch is one of the largest real time data platforms in the world, processing more than 68 quadrillion metric observations per month and growing fast! This requires teams in CloudWatch to innovate at an unprecedented scale. In CloudWatch we love giving customers what they want: high quality, highly usable, highly available services. It's humbling and energizing to work with excellent, dedicated engineers to build and deliver world-leading service monitoring solutions at AWS scale.

We're looking for a new teammate who is enthusiastic, empathetic, curious, motivated, reliable, and able to work effectively with a diverse team of peers; someone who will help us amplify the positive & inclusive team culture we've been building.

Key job responsibilities

As a Software Development Engineer for the CloudWatch organisation, you will work in an agile team to design, build and maintain highly available, massively scaled systems used by millions of users worldwide. You will design and implement complex software to the highest quality for the services you and your team own, building our telemetry collection agents in Rust and Go and engaging with the upstream open-source communities, such as OpenTelemetry, that our software is built on and contributes to. You will help expand our services across all AWS Regions, and when issues arise you will dive deep to understand the root cause and apply fixes that prevent them recurring. You will leverage GenAI and AI-powered development tools to enhance your productivity while staying current with emerging technologies, and you will also mentor junior engineers, helping grow the technical capability of the team.

A day in the life

On a typical day you might root-cause a collection issue affecting a fleet of hosts, ship a new feature in one of our agents, take a change upstream to OpenTelemetry, or design a solution to a performance or footprint problem you have never seen before. You translate customer and internal requirements into designs, weigh the tradeoffs, and break the work into incremental deliverables your team can ship. A strong community of senior and principal engineers gives direct feedback and pushes your thinking. You are surrounded by people who are passionate about observability and who believe there is still a lot of ground to cover in helping developers, SREs, and operators understand their systems.

About The Team

We own telemetry collection for CloudWatch: the agents that run on millions of hosts and containers across AWS and gather the metrics, logs, and traces that everything else in CloudWatch is built on. Our software is written in Rust and Go and built on OpenTelemetry, and we contribute back to those open-source communities. We are a growing team in Dublin, and our mission is to give every AWS customer a reliable, low-overhead way to collect the telemetry their systems produce.

We invest in growing our engineers from day one. You will be paired with a buddy, work closely with senior and principal engineers.
