Maintains and improves MinDet's scientific desktop software that controls robotic microscopes and uses AI to analyse mineral images for mining clients. Day to day it's Python backend/GUI work (NumPy, pandas, PyTorch, OpenCV, PySide6), plus CI/CD pipelines, security hygiene, and debugging hardware/software integration.
Salary: $78,000 – $90,000 per year
About the role
We're looking for a software developer to take over the day-to-day running and improvement of our scientific software. You'll maintain and contribute to the existing codebase, polishing, making improvements, while keeping things working smoothly across our desktop applications and the instruments they connect to.
This role sits across software and hardware. Most of your time will be spent on software, but that software often controls and talks to our robotics. Our clients rely on the numbers our software produces, so we value people who take care to check that results are right, not just that the program runs.
On the integration side, you need a working understanding of how the hardware behaves and be comfortable working out whether a problem is in the code, interface communication or the device itself.
Key responsibilities
Improving existing backend and frontend software, polishing existing features and adding new ones to improve functionality while still maintaining stability for clients
Scaling software faster and able to handle larger data, while making sure the results stay the same
Set up and maintain automated build, test and release pipelines (CI/CD), so every change is checked automatically before it reaches users
Introduce and run a pull request workflow: changes are reviewed by another person before they are merged
Look after the security of our software and data: keep dependencies up to date, manage passwords and access keys safely, and protect client data
Review code, write tests and keep simple documentation so the rest of the team can follow how things work
Required Skills and Experience
Experience writing software, ideally in scientific, engineering or data-heavy work. Graduates with strong university, research, or personal projects are encouraged to apply
Python - Write clean, reliable, efficient code with good error handling (defensive programming), and understand how the language works under the hood
NumPy, pandas - Work efficiently with large datasets and familiar with basic statistics (averages, distributions, histograms, charting)
PyTorch, OpenCV - Work with existing image analysis and AI code; GPU experience is a plus
PySide6, PyQt - Build and maintain GUI
Docker/Linux/Windows/conda/pip - Set up and troubleshoot development environments
Secure Development Practices -Handle credentials, dependencies and client data safely; recognise common security risks
Git/GitHub/CI-CD/pull requests - Familiar with working in a development team: sharing code, reviewing others' work and taking feedback on your own
Familiar with setting up or working with CI/CD pipelines and pull request reviews
Comfort working on software written by someone else: understanding it and changing it safely
Candidates must hold full and unrestricted working rights in Australia
About us
MinDet fabricates self-contained sensing devices that provide high-resolution modal mineralogy, size distribution, and liberation of ore in real-time to facilitate maximising operational gains. These devices are embedded systems which analyses images of mineral samples taken with robotic microscopes. The software finds and measures each particle in an image, uses AI to determine which minerals are present and in what amounts for mining companies and commercial laboratories.
