Senior Web Developer at greatminds – Remote job | Jobyssey

Who We Are

Great Minds is a high-growth, mission-driven organization founded by educators in 2007. As a for-profit, Public Benefit Corporation, we believe all students deserve access to meaningful, challenging content—and all teachers deserve tools that are intuitive, effective, and built for the realities of today’s classrooms.

We develop high-quality, knowledge-rich math, science and ELA curricula grounded in research and designed in collaboration with educators. Our materials reflect real classroom needs and are built to drive lasting student outcomes.

We are committed to usability, coherence, and practical implementation—supporting teachers not just through curriculum, but with professional learning, purposeful technology, and responsive service that enable strong adoption and impact.

What We Build

Our products—Eureka Math and Eureka Math², Wit & Wisdom, PhD Science, Geodes, and the newly launched Arts & Letters ELA—are trusted by thousands of schools and districts nationwide.

Eureka Math is the most widely used math curriculum in the U.S., and is focused on balancing conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application.
Wit & Wisdom® and Arts & Letters ELA™ anchor our reading strategy with content-rich, grade-level instruction that integrates literature, history, and the arts, grounded in the science of reading. Geodes® complements our reading suite with decodable texts that pair phonics with meaningful content to support early literacy.
PhD Science is a hands-on K-5 Science program that sparks curiosity as students build enduring knowledge of how the scientific world works.

These programs reflect a shared belief in high expectations, joyful rigor, and deep respect for educators and students.

Where We’re Headed

Great Minds is entering a new stage of growth and product maturity. We are focused on building more connected, customer-informed experiences across the full educator journey—from curriculum to professional learning to platform and support.

Our long-term vision is to become a true partner in impact—not just delivering curriculum, but supporting educators in achieving outcomes at scale.

Job Purpose

We are looking for an experienced Senior Web Developer who will own our marketing website end-to-end as the sole developer — from architecture and build to day-to-day maintenance and continuous improvement. You'll serve as a technical thought partner to the marketing team, advising on the best way to accomplish goals, not just executing requests. This role requires comfort with one or more CMS platforms (including ideally headless CMS platforms), strong front-end engineering, and enough back-end fluency to diagnose issues, run queries, and keep the technical foundation healthy. You'll build modern, responsive, and secure web experiences while supporting SEO and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) — and you'll do it as the primary technical owner, capable of leading the work end-to-end without reliance on a broader development team.

Responsibilities

Front-End Development

Build reusable UI components using React, Tailwind CSS or Bootstrap, and Storybook.
Create responsive, accessible, and semantic templates that align with brand and UX standards.
Implement modern build tools and workflows (Webpack, Vite, etc.).

CMS Development

Develop and maintain custom themes, templates, plugins, or content models depending on platform (e.g., WordPress, Contentful, Storyblok, or equivalent).
Work with structured content types, custom fields, and content modeling best practices across traditional and headless CMS architectures.
Integrate with REST APIs and/or GraphQL for dynamic, decoupled, or headless implementations.
Evaluate and implement CMS capabilities that reduce reliance on custom development and empower marketing teams to manage content independently.

Server Fluency & Back-End Support

Navigate server environments confidently — read and interpret server logs, identify errors, and escalate or resolve issues independently.
Run SQL or equivalent database queries to investigate content or configuration issues, support migrations, and validate data integrity.
Manage or support web server configuration (e.g., Nginx, Apache) including redirects, caching rules, and environment-level settings.
Work within Linux/Unix command-line environments for routine server-side tasks.
Coordinate independently with IT or hosting partners on infrastructure, access, and environment management.

Security & Performance

Apply CMS hardening best practices and follow OWASP Top 10 guidelines regardless of platform.
Prevent common vulnerabilities (XSS, CSRF, SQL injection) through secure coding practices.
Optimize for Core Web Vitals (LCP, CLS, INP) using caching, code splitting, and image/CDN optimization.

AEO, SEO & Accessibility

Implement clean HTML, heading hierarchy, and crawlable templates.
Ensure proper use of meta tags, canonical tags, robots directives, and XML sitemaps.
Support structured data/schema markup (schema.org/JSON-LD) for rich snippets and answer engines.
Align technical implementation with accessibility, search, and AI discoverability goals.

Collaboration & Workflow

Serve as a technical thought partner to marketing, design, and IT stakeholders — advising on feasibility, tradeoffs, and approach, not just executing requests.
Use Git-based workflows and contribute in agile/sprint cycles.
Document code, architectural decisions, and technical standards to ensure maintainability and scalability.

You've spent 5+ years doing hands-on front-end and CMS work — WordPress and/or a headless platform like Contentful — including content modeling, templating, and API-driven content delivery, built with React, TypeScript/JS, Tailwind or Bootstrap, and Storybook, on top of solid PHP and/or , HTML5, and CSS3 fundamentals. You're genuinely comfortable on the server side: reading and interpreting logs, writing and troubleshooting SQL queries, working in a Linux/Unix shell, and doing basic Nginx/Apache configuration — because as the sole developer on this site, there's no one else to hand those problems to. You understand technical SEO/AEO (semantic HTML, structured data, Core Web Vitals) and CMS security (hardening, OWASP) well enough to defend your decisions, and you're comfortable in Git-based, agile workflows.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience across both traditional (e.g., WordPress) and headless/API-first CMS platforms (e.g., Contentful, Sanity, Storyblok).
Next.js, Gatsby, or other headless framework experience.
CRM and marketing platform integration experience (Marketo, HubSpot, Salesforce).
Containerized local dev environments (Docker, Lando, DevKinsta, or similar).
Cloud hosting experience (Netlify, Vercel, AWS, or similar).
