Wise is hiring a Senior Staff Software Engineer in Budapest to build and maintain robust, large-scale payment systems in Java/JVM technologies. The role blends hands-on engineering with long-term technical strategy, cross-team leadership, roadmap ownership, and mentoring engineers across the organization.
- Building and maintaining robust and scalable systems
- Collaborating on feature implementation and issue resolution

- Balancing immediate business needs with sustainable architecture and long-term scalability
- Playing a key role in cross-team collaboration
- Documenting at the appropriate abstraction level to scale adoption of developments
- 10+ years of software engineering experience with significant experience in Java or other JVM-based languages
- 2+ years of experience in architecting large scale systems with proven ability to propose and implement domain-driven technical solutions capable of scaling along with the business
- Willingness to take broad ownership of squad responsibilities including building roadmaps and scoping
- Mentoring teams on their technical and product roadmaps
- Experience in up-levelling junior engineers and providing guidance to senior engineers via processes and setting a high bar
- Proactive and effective communication skills to describe technical concepts to non-technical audiences
- Eagerness to learn new domains and strong bias towards action
- Experience leading engineering teams and driving large-scale projects to successful completion across multiple engineering teams
