Senior Software Engineer - Embedded

** While we welcome interest from all over the world, we have a local-for-local recruitment policy so the preferred candidate lives close to the office in de Lier. **

In the middle of Het Westland, where innovation in food and flowers has been thriving for decades, Priva builds technology that keeps greenhouses growing and buildings breathing. We create intelligent control systems that help customers operate sustainable, reliable environments.

Why this role matters

CST maintains products that remain important to customers throughout their supported lifetime. In this role, you improve and extend embedded systems where reliability, security, compatibility and careful change matter as much as new functionality.

• Keep business-critical embedded products stable, secure and maintainable while they continue to serve customers.

• Solve complex problems across software, Linux, hardware, networking and control engineering.

• Provide senior technical judgement: understand risk, make pragmatic trade-offs and prevent recurring failures.

• Raise engineering quality through defensive programming, secure coding, strong documentation and thoughtful reviews.

Your team

You will join the Customer Satisfaction Team (CST), working with software engineers, QA, Product and domain specialists. The team supports and evolves established products, investigates field issues and delivers targeted improvements without compromising system stability or long-term supportability.

What you’ll do

• Design, implement and maintain embedded software across Linux-based devices and connected tooling.

• Investigate incidents and hard-to-reproduce field issues across application code, operating system, network and hardware boundaries.

• Apply defensive programming and secure coding practices, including robust input validation, failure handling, logging and safe defaults.

• Work with Linux and Yocto-based environments, including System V services, udev rules, iptables, processes, signals and daemon behaviour.

• Develop and review code and scripts in C, C#, Python, Bash and PowerShell, choosing the simplest suitable tool for the problem.

• Maintain and extend integrations using BACnet and web technologies such as HTTPS and WebSockets; work with related protocols including CANopen, Modbus and DALI when needed.

• Use control engineering knowledge to understand system behaviour and translate operational needs into dependable software changes.

• Create clear technical designs, tests, diagnostics and documentation so changes can be understood and maintained by others.

• Lead technical discussions, code reviews, root-cause analysis and improvement actions, and coach colleagues through complex engineering problems.

Essentials skills:

• Senior-level experience developing and maintaining embedded or systems software in production environments.

• Strong C skills, plus practical ability in C#, Python, Bash and PowerShell.

• Hands-on Linux experience in a Yocto environment, including System V, udev and iptables.

• A disciplined approach to defensive programming, secure coding and failure-aware design.

• Experience with concurrency and Linux process behaviour, including threads, signals and daemonization.

• Comfort working directly with hardware, technical schematics, interfaces and real-world device constraints.

• Experience with BACnet and a working understanding of HTTPS and WebSockets.

• Control engineering experience and the ability to reason about control behaviour in operational systems.

• Clear written communication. You document code, scripts, decisions and operational knowledge thoroughly enough that others can safely maintain them.

• Ability to make evidence-based technical trade-offs, review the work of experienced peers and guide less experienced engineers.

Useful additional experience

• CANopen, Modbus, DALI or other industrial and building-automation protocols.

• Network troubleshooting, certificates, encryption and secure device communication.

• Automated testing, hardware-in-the-loop testing, build systems, CI/CD and Git-based workflows.

• Maintaining long-lived or legacy products where compatibility, regression risk and supportability are critical.

What we offer

• Purpose with impact: your work supports reliable, resource-efficient environments used by customers worldwide.

• Complex engineering: meaningful problems spanning embedded software, Linux, hardware, networking and control.

• Growth and learning: room to deepen your expertise and influence engineering practices across the team.

• Flexible collaboration: a hybrid working environment with close contact across disciplines.

• An open, practical culture that values craftsmanship, ownership and diverse perspectives.
