Experienced Software Developer (AI, MCP, B2B)

(Full-Time, On-Site with Flex Options)

At Bison & Bird, we develop digital products that deliver meaningful, measurable outcomes for our clients. We tackle complex challenges, move quickly, and design solutions that not only look good but also perform. Our team is small, multidisciplinary, and accountable. We don’t hide behind buzzwords or theoretical frameworks. We build, refine, and deliver.

We are hiring an Experienced Software Developer who can walk into our Calgary office and make an immediate impact. Someone who understands AI model development, MCP servers, modern backend architecture, and sound B2B engineering practices, but who also values clear communication, documentation, and the ability to stabilize or accelerate a project when the team needs it most.

If you value ownership, care deeply about craftsmanship, and want to work somewhere that expects high performance while supporting your personal and professional growth, we’d like to meet you.

The Bison & Bird Way of Hiring

We hire the same way we build — with clarity, speed, and high standards. To respect your time and ours, here’s what you can expect when you apply:

• We move fast. Strong candidates advance quickly. If it’s not the right fit, we’ll let you know just as quickly.
• Each stage has clear non-negotiables. Missing requirements, failing to communicate, inadequate documentation, on-site unavailability, or failure to follow instructions will result in an immediate decline.
• We evaluate more than skills. Ownership, professionalism, and alignment with our values are just as important as your technical ability.
• No guesswork, no long delays. You’ll always know where you stand and what’s expected next.
• We hire for mutual fit. We seek individuals who thrive in our pace, culture, and commitment to delivering genuine value.

Why Bison & Bird might be right for you.

Everything in our Employee Handbook is designed to support your success and ours. Here’s what that looks like in practice:

You value impact over theory.

Our Handbook emphasizes Value — delivering ROI, not academic proofs of concept. You’ll build systems that go live, get used, and drive meaningful results for real businesses.

You appreciate autonomy paired with accountability.

With Courageous Leadership and Interpersonal Communication as core values, we don’t micromanage — but we expect you to communicate proactively, document your thought process, and take ownership of what you deliver.

You thrive in complexity and change.

Cognitive Flexibility and Futuristic Thinking fuel our work. You’ll operate in environments where AI, automation, and client requirements evolve rapidly — and you won’t just adapt, you’ll help shape the direction.

You lead with emotional intelligence.

We’re a small team with high expectations. Your ability to collaborate, ask questions early, give feedback constructively, and “fail with grace” matters just as much as your technical depth.

About the Role

As an Experienced Software Developer at Bison & Bird, you’ll build and refine advanced systems that include AI model training pipelines, MCP server integrations, backend architectures, and cloud deployments. You will work closely with designers and project managers to translate complex client needs into clear, reliable technical solutions.

This role is ideal for someone who can step into active projects, bring order to ambiguity, and deliver clean, maintainable solutions with minimal oversight.

Your Responsibilities

Develop and deliver robust AI and software systems.

You’ll work on real client projects that demand clear engineering processes, predictable delivery, and measurable ROI. This includes model training pipelines, inference APIs, and orchestration layers.

Communicate progress through daily time tracking.

Our Daily Time Tracking Policy ensures transparency, accurate forecasting, and integrity in client billing. You’ll log your work daily so the rest of the team can plan, support, and stay aligned.

Architect and maintain scalable, well-documented code.

You’ll apply best practices in documentation, logging, testing, API design, version control, and CI/CD. Your work should be understandable, structured, and ready for handoff.

Partnership is foundational at Bison & Bird. You’ll work side‑by‑side with designers, developers, and the CEO to co‑create solutions, raise concerns early, and align technical decisions with client goals.

Contribute to a strong, inclusive team culture.

You’ll model the principle of “Fail with Grace,” contribute ideas freely, and take responsibility for both successes and mistakes.

What You Bring

Required

• Proven experience delivering production software — with examples, repos, or case studies
• Hands‑on experience training or fine‑tuning AI/ML models (LLMs, embeddings, RAG, or similar)
• Experience building or integrating MCP servers or related orchestration systems
• Strong backend skills with one or more modern frameworks (Node.js, Django, Laravel, Rails, Go, etc.)
• Knowledge of cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
• Strong documentation habits and a clear communication style
• Ability to work full‑time on‑site within company‑defined hours (see below)
• Ability to take ownership of technical decisions and explain them clearly

Nice to Have

• Experience with vector databases, embeddings pipelines, or knowledge graphs
• Experience collaborating closely with designers (Figma, prototypes, design systems)
• Familiarity with observability tools (structured logging, metrics, monitoring)
• Previous work in a consultancy, agency, or small high‑performing team
• Comfort working on complex or inherited codebases and stabilizing them quickly
