Design AI-powered workflows for patent attorneys, focusing on patent search, claim charting, and portfolio analysis using LLMs and generative AI in a fast-growing legal-tech startup.
Patlytics is the fastest-growing AI-native patent intelligence platform, transforming how IP is protected and monetized at scale. Our advanced LLMs and generative AI engine, custom-built for intellectual property, power every phase of the patent workflow from invention disclosure through litigation, delivering citation-backed insights with unprecedented accuracy and speed.
Backed by $65 million in total funding from investors including SignalFire, Google's Gradient fund, 8VC, N47, Myriad Venture Partners, Relativity, Alumni Ventures, Antiportfolio Ventures, and BAM Corner Point, Patlytics is trusted by 40% of the AmLaw 100, including Quinn Emanuel, Latham & Watkins, Foley & Lardner, and Susman Godfrey, as well as leading corporate IP teams at Rivian, Google, Panasonic, Sanofi, and Canon. Customers are seeing up to 90% reduction in project time, with claim charts that used to cost $30K+ in attorney time now completed at a fraction of that cost.
With teams across the globe we're building a global company fueled by exceptional talent and bold ideas. Our rapid expansion is driven by people who bring entrepreneurial energy, intellectual curiosity, and a shared commitment to setting the global standard for AI-powered IP intelligence. We're creating a culture where diverse perspectives shape breakthrough innovation and every voice contributes to transforming how the world protects ideas.
Patent attorneys are among the most analytically demanding users you'll ever design for. Their workflows are high-stakes, deeply nuanced, and largely unchanged for decades, until now. You're the person who makes AI feel intuitive, trustworthy, and indispensable in their hands.
You won't be pushing pixels in isolation. You'll be embedded with the customers who use Patlytics every day: litigators building claim charts under deadline pressure, prosecution teams managing sprawling portfolios, IP strategists making million-dollar decisions on prior art. Your job is to understand how they think, where they struggle, and what "better" actually looks like in their world, then design the experiences that get them there.
This is a role for a designer obsessed with how people actually use products, not just how they look. You're drawn to the messy, human side of design: the research sessions that upend your assumptions, the deployments that break in ways you didn't anticipate, the moment a skeptical user says "this actually works." You'll do that here full-time, at the frontier of AI, in one of law's most consequential domains.
Design end-to-end experiences: Own Patlytics' core workflows, including patent search, claim charting, portfolio analysis, prosecution, and litigation support. Every interaction should help users leverage AI with confidence and clarity.
Be the voice of the customer: Conduct user research directly with patent attorneys, IP counsel, and legal operations teams. Sit in on deployments. Watch real usage. Let what you learn reshape what you build.
Make AI legible: Design interfaces that surface AI-generated insights (prior art results, claim mappings, portfolio analytics) in ways that are transparent, verifiable, and actionable. Help users understand what the AI did, why, and how to act on it.
Stay at the forefront of AI interaction design: Keep up with the latest in LLM-powered interfaces, retrieval-augmented generation, agentic workflows, and emerging patterns for human-AI collaboration, then bring those ideas into the product.
Own the full lifecycle: Drive design from early discovery and concept exploration through high-fidelity prototyping, usability testing, and post-launch iteration. Own the quality of the shipped experience, not just the mockup.
Create scalable systems: Build design patterns that bring consistency across a rapidly expanding product surface while staying flexible for the specialized needs of different IP workflows.
6+ years of product design experience, with a strong portfolio demonstrating end-to-end ownership of complex, workflow-heavy products, ideally in B2B SaaS, legal tech, professional services, or enterprise tools for expert users.
Proven ability to design for AI-powered products. You understand the unique UX challenges of LLM-based systems (handling uncertainty, surfacing confidence, designing for variable outputs, managing user trust) and you've shipped solutions that address them.
Precise communication that adjusts for audience, whether you're walking an attorney through a prototype, aligning with a PM on scope, or presenting a design rationale to leadership.
Extreme ownership. You drive projects to completion without waiting for direction, close feedback loops proactively, and hold yourself accountable for the experience customers actually have, not just the one you designed on paper.
Direct experience with vertical AI / LLM products or agent-based systems.
Experience in a startup or early-stage environment where you built process from scratch.
Familiarity with the patent lifecycle: prosecution, litigation, portfolio management, search and analytics.
Don't check every box? We'd still love to hear from you. Many exceptional candidates don't meet every requirement on paper, and some of the best hires far exceed them.
