Careers at TCS: It means more

TCS is a purpose-led transformation company, built on belief. We do not just help businesses to transform through technology. We support them in making a meaningful difference to the people and communities they serve - our clients include some of the biggest brands in the UK and worldwide. For you, it means more to make an impact that matters, through challenging projects which demand ambitious innovation and thought leadership.

We are looking for a pragmatic, deeply technical engineer who values long-term system health, maintainability, and sound engineering principles over short-term fixes.

• Intentional Architect - Applies design patterns and architectural principles only when they solve a clear business or technical problem.
• Performance-Focused Engineer - Strong expertise in JVM internals, memory management, garbage collection tuning, and performance profiling.
• Collaborative Technical Leader - Actively challenges assumptions and architectural decisions when they introduce risks, tight coupling, or single points of failure.
• Pragmatic Full-Stack Engineer - Primarily strong in Java, Spring Boot, Microservices, Kafka, and data engineering. Comfortable working within React applications, state management frameworks, and modern front-end architectures.

The Role:

We are seeking a Senior Java Full Stack Engineer to design, build, and optimise scalable enterprise applications using Java, Microservices, Kafka, Oracle, and React while driving architectural excellence and engineering best practices.

Your responsibilities:

Architecture & Design (30%)

• Design, build, and maintain highly scalable backend services using Java, Spring Boot, and event-driven distributed architectures.
• Evaluate existing application landscapes and identify areas where refactoring to proper design patterns (e.g., Domain-Driven Design, Event Sourcing, Circuit Breakers) improves maintainability and system resilience.
• Lead design reviews and construct technical blueprints that map clear system interactions and data flows.

Data & Messaging Engineering (40%)

• Author highly optimized, transactional schemas and queries in Oracle RDBMS; diagnose slow-running queries using execution plans and introduce indexing or caching schemas appropriately.
• Design event streams and topic schemas in Apache Kafka that guarantee data consistency, fault tolerance, and minimal latency across independent microservices.
• Manage complex distributed transaction patterns (e.g., Saga Pattern) where traditional ACID properties across single databases are unachievable.

Leadership & Full-Stack Evolution (30%)

• Conduct rigorous code and architecture reviews, acting as a gatekeeper for code quality, structural integrity, and architectural consistency.
• Mentor mid-level engineers by explicitly breaking down architectural trade-offs during pair programming or architectural debates.
• (Bonus) Act as a bridge to the frontend ecosystem by designing clean, contract-first REST or GraphQL APIs and occasionally developing responsive user workflows in React.

Your Profile:

Essential skills/knowledge/experience:

Must-Have Backend Expertise

• Core Java : Deep comprehension of concurrency models, memory management (JVM tuning), generics, Collections framework, and functional paradigms introduced in Java 8+.
• Spring Ecosystem : Comprehensive experience with Spring Boot, Spring Data, Spring Security, and Spring Cloud. Must be able to explain how dependency injection functions at a runtime level.
• Distributed Messaging : Production experience using Apache Kafka. You should understand partitioning strategies, retention policies, replication factors, and delivery guarantees (at-least-once vs. exactly-once).
• Relational Databases : Exceptional Oracle SQL and PL/SQL skills. Proven capability in debugging locks, understanding isolation levels, and optimising complex joins or batch processing jobs.

Must-Have Design Metrology

• Mastery of SOLID principles and classic Gang of Four (GoF) design patterns.
• Experience architecting microservices with distributed communication vulnerabilities in mind (handling partial failures, retries, and dead-letter queues).

Desirable skills/knowledge/experience:

Frontend Ecosystem: Practical experience with React, state management libraries (Redux, Context API), and modern build tools (Webpack, Vite). Comfortable managing state synchronization between client and server.

Rewards & Benefits

• TCS is consistently voted a Top Employer in the UK and globally.
• Our competitive salary packages feature pension, health care, life assurance, laptop and access to extensive training resources and discounts within the larger Tata network.
