Builds and maintains BNZ’s React-based design system, ensuring accessible, high-quality frontend components and standards used across the bank’s digital platforms.
Worker Type:
PermanentHere at BNZ, it's about more than just banking. We work together in an agile, energising environment to create innovative solutions through our promise "If you can imagine a better future, let's find a way."
We support wellbeing, flexible working and have a generous leave offering. There is the opportunity for growth, learning and career development. No two days are the same.
The Design System team at BNZ provides the front-end foundations behind our digital experiences. We create the standards, tooling and reusable components that help teams across the bank deliver consistent, accessible and quality experiences for millions of customers every year.
Our mission is to turn BNZ's design language into products used by customers and colleagues every day. Working at the intersection of design and engineering, we build the shared platform that powers experiences across web, iOS and Android, helping teams move faster, raise quality and focus on solving customer problems.
We also help shape frontend standards, build shared infrastructure, and make it easier for teams to create experiences that are accessible, reliable and consistent.
This is an Auckland based hybrid role with three anchor days in the office and two days where you can work flexibly.
Mō te Tūranga | About the Role
We sat down with the People Leader (who you would report to) and they told us the following about the role:
What do we want you to know before you apply?
We know that no one candidate will tick every box. If this role excites you, we encourage you to apply - even if your experience doesn't perfectly match every requirement.
We're building a team with diverse experiences, perspectives and backgrounds because we know that better outcomes come from different ways of thinking. We're looking for people who are curious, collaborative and passionate about creating accessible, high-quality digital experiences.
If you're someone who enjoys learning, sharing knowledge, solving meaningful problems and helping others succeed, we'd love to hear from you.
What you’ll bring to this role:
Ideally, we are looking for someone who has come from a design background, understands accessibility and customer experience flows, and has moved into a developer role. As above, we know you may not tick every box, but we’re looking for someone with some of the combination of some of the below experience:
What is the team culture and environment like?
We’re a collaborative, supportive team that values accessibility, quality and continuous learning. Accessibility is a core part of how we design, build and measure our success, not an afterthought. We value curiosity, kindness, trust and craftsmanship as much as technical expertise.
As a team, our success comes from helping others succeed in building excellent digital experiences. We work closely with designers, developers and product teams across BNZ to understand their needs and build solutions that make it easier for them to deliver great customer experiences.
You'll have opportunities to grow your skills, contribute ideas, experiment with new technologies and help shape the future of frontend engineering at BNZ.
What projects / work will the candidate be working on now and into the next year?
Over the next year, you'll help evolve the foundations that power BNZ's digital experiences. This includes expanding our React component library, improving accessibility, modernising frontend tooling and architecture, strengthening the connection between design and code, and supporting teams as they adopt shared patterns and standards. You'll also help shape how emerging technologies, including AI-assisted development and MCPs, are used within our design system and frontend ecosystem.
What will success look like for the candidate in this role?
Within your first 12 months, you will:
