Senior Embedded Linux Software Engineer – Edge AI & IoT

At the heart of this role is our embedded Linux Edge AI sensor platform.

You will help shape how our devices are built, provisioned, secured, updated and supported throughout their lifecycle. Your work will extend across embedded software, hardware integration, Edge AI, audio processing, device deployment and the cloud services supporting our deployed fleet.

This is not a narrow software role.

You will work closely with hardware, electronics, AI, cloud and manufacturing specialists to solve complex engineering problems and turn emerging technologies into dependable, field-ready products.

You do not need to be the deepest specialist in every area. You will, however, need the engineering judgement, curiosity and adaptability to move between disciplines and improve the reliability of the complete system.

What you will be working on:

• Own and continuously improve our embedded Linux platform, including Yocto builds, boot configuration, device trees, kernel changes, drivers and system services.
• Improve build, release, provisioning, flashing, diagnostics and over-the-air update processes.
• Develop more secure and repeatable workflows for deploying, maintaining and recovering connected devices.
• Integrate and troubleshoot cameras, microphones, cellular modems and environmental sensors.
• Work across hardware interfaces including I2C, SPI, UART, CSI, USB and PCIe.
• Strengthen device security through OS hardening, secure boot, improved key management and vulnerability management.
• Profile and optimise embedded machine-learning inference and computer-vision features within device power, compute and bandwidth constraints.
• Support quantisation, NPU integration and power-aware Edge AI runtime improvements.
• Enhance audio-analysis capabilities, including event detection, classification, direction of arrival and multimodal detection.
• Contribute to backend services, APIs, data pipelines and internal tools supporting our deployed sensor fleet.
• Improve fleet diagnostics, observability and operational reliability.
• Work closely with a small multidisciplinary team from early concept through to manufacturing and field deployment.

You will help us create a platform where:

• Devices can be built, provisioned, updated and recovered through secure, repeatable processes.
• Edge AI, computer vision and audio-analysis features perform reliably within real-world hardware constraints.
• New cameras, modems, microphones and sensors can be integrated without fragile one-off solutions.
• Device issues can be diagnosed and resolved effectively across a deployed fleet.
• Data is reliably ingested, processed and stored through observable cloud services.
• Engineering decisions consider the entire product lifecycle, from development and manufacturing to deployment and long-term operation.

To be successful, you will have:

• Strong production software engineering experience with substantial hands-on embedded Linux development.
• Advanced capability in C/C++ and Python.
• Experience with Yocto or a comparable embedded Linux build system.
• Confidence working with device trees, kernels, drivers, system services and hardware-level debugging.
• Experience integrating software directly with cameras, modems, sensors or other electronic hardware.
• A track record of improving build, deployment, update or operational reliability for connected devices.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to investigate issues across software and hardware boundaries.
• Sound engineering judgement and the ability to make practical technical decisions.
• Clear communication skills and the confidence to work independently within a small multidisciplinary team.

Experience that would be valuable

You do not need to bring everything on this list, but exposure to any of the following would be highly regarded:

• Edge machine-learning runtimes, accelerators or NPUs
• Computer vision or embedded inference optimisation
• Model quantisation and power-aware runtime integration
• Audio DSP, event classification or direction-of-arrival processing
• Secure boot, device hardening and embedded cybersecurity
• Cellular, wireless or low-power IoT connectivity
• Linux networking and connected-device diagnostics
• MQTT, streaming data or time-series platforms
• Fleet management and observability
• Cloud infrastructure, APIs and data pipelines
• Internal web tools or modern web development
• Products operating in outdoor, industrial or resource-constrained environments

Why join Schréder EdgeMachines?

Work on complete, real-world technology

Your work will connect embedded Linux, outdoor electronics, Edge AI, wireless communications, cloud services and manufacturing. You will see the technology move from engineering concept through to devices operating in the field.

Explore what lighting infrastructure can become

EdgeMachines is incorporating next-generation technology into lighting and urban infrastructure, creating platforms that can sense, analyse, communicate and respond to the environments around them.

Have genuine technical ownership

Our team is small, collaborative and practical. Senior engineers are trusted to influence architecture, improve engineering standards and take ownership of meaningful technical outcomes.

Solve varied engineering challenges

One day you may be debugging a hardware interface or Linux driver. The next, you could be improving an OTA deployment process, profiling an Edge AI model or investigating data flowing from devices into the cloud.

Join an established global organisation

Schréder combines the credibility, industry reach and resources of a global lighting technology organisation with the creativity and technical ambition of a specialist innovation team.

Is this the right role for you?

This opportunity will suit an engineer who enjoys building dependable products rather than working only on isolated software features.

You are likely to thrive here if you:

• Enjoy working close to hardware.
• Are comfortable moving between embedded software, devices and cloud systems.
• Prefer practical solutions over unnecessary complexity.
• Take ownership of problems through to deployment.
• Are curious about emerging technologies and how they can be applied in the real world.
• Want your work to become part of physical infrastructure rather than remain only on a screen.

If you are excited by the opportunity to help create intelligent connected devices that bring next-generation technology into lighting and urban infrastructure, we would like to hear from you.
