Senior Developer - Remote First

Senior Java Software Engineer

Complex Systems | Modern Stack | Agile & XP Culture

Remote First (office visit approx. once per month - South Manchester)

£60,000 - £70,000 + Bonus + Excellent Benefits

We're partnering with a long-established technology business building modern platforms at the heart of a complex, highly regulated domain. With continued growth across their product suite, they're now looking for three Senior Java Software Engineers to join their engineering teams.

The Opportunity

This is a hands-on Senior Engineering role working on large-scale, business-critical systems, within an organisation that genuinely values engineering craft, collaboration and continuous improvement.

Agile and XP practices are embedded across the engineering function, with a strong focus on TDD, pairing, continuous integration and shared ownership.

You'll join a cross-functional Scrum team alongside Product Managers, UX Designers, Test Analysts and fellow Engineers, taking ownership of features from initial idea through to production.

At Senior level, you'll also play an important role in mentoring other Developers, sharing knowledge and raising engineering standards across the team.

You'll be encouraged to challenge existing approaches, contribute ideas and have a genuine influence on both technical direction and how the team works.

What They're Looking For

They're looking for an experienced Java Engineer who combines strong technical ability with a collaborative approach to software development.

You'll ideally:

• Have strong commercial Java development experience
• Be comfortable delivering complex features end-to-end
• Care about clean, maintainable and well-tested code
• Have experience with, or a genuine interest in, TDD and XP practices
• Enjoy pairing, mentoring and sharing knowledge with other Engineers
• Be comfortable contributing to technical discussions and challenging existing approaches
• Have experience working within collaborative Agile engineering teams

You don't need to tick every box across the wider technology stack. Strong engineering fundamentals and the ability to pick up new technologies are more important.

Tech Stack & Environment

The core platform is Java-based, supported by a modern and evolving stack:

• Java (JDK 17), Spring Boot
• React, TypeScript
• AWS, including serverless approaches
• Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes
• Chef, Vagrant, Packer
• CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tooling

Bonus points for experience with:

• Cloud-native or serverless architectures
• AWS
• DevOps and Infrastructure as Code
• Building scalable, secure platforms

There's a strong internal engineering culture with communities of practice, regular knowledge sharing and dedicated innovation days focused on learning and experimentation.

You'll Enjoy This Role If You…

• Enjoy solving problems within complex, long-lived systems
• Care about code quality, testing and sustainable delivery
• Like having ownership rather than simply working through tickets
• Enjoy mentoring and helping other Engineers develop
• Thrive in collaborative, Agile environments
• Want technical influence without moving away from hands-on development

What's in It for You?

• £60,000 - £70,000 salary
• Bonus and excellent benefits package
• Remote-first working with office attendance around once per month
• Clear progression and opportunities to develop further technically
• Strong investment in learning and career development
• Inclusive, sociable engineering culture with regular team and company events
