Senior Data Engineer (2IC to the Head of Data & AI) at a global financial organisation in Sydney, driving a major Microsoft Fabric migration and building the platform foundations for AI and advanced analytics. Day to day: SQL, data modelling, ETL/ELT, governance, and mentoring engineers.
A global financial organisation is investing heavily in Data & AI, with a major Microsoft Fabric migration underway and the foundations being built for its next phase of AI and advanced analytics.
This newly created Senior Data Engineer / 2IC role will work closely with the Head of Data & AI, combining hands‑on engineering with the opportunity to influence platform design, engineering standards and data practices.
You'll play a key role in the transformation, with the autonomy to challenge existing approaches, improve how data is engineered and help shape the future data platform.
The organisation has been recognised with multiple awards for Innovation and Employee satisfaction, reflecting its strong focus on technology, people and continuous improvement.
Play a key role in the Microsoft Fabric migration
Design and build scalable data solutions across the modern data platform
Contribute to engineering standards, reusable patterns and quality practices
Work across data modelling, ETL/ELT, transformation and integration
Help shape how data is structured, governed and made available for analytics and AI
Provide technical guidance and mentoring across the wider engineering capability
We're looking for a strong Senior Data Engineer who combines deep technical capability with the confidence to influence and operate with autonomy.
You'll ideally bring:
Advanced SQL and strong database development skills
Strong data modelling, ETL/ELT and transformation experience
Experience with Microsoft Fabric - Bonus!
Understanding of modern lakehouse, warehouse and Medallion architecture
Strong understanding of data quality, lineage, metadata and governance
Experience with Git, code review and CI/CD
Python and/or PySpark would be advantageous
A track record of taking ownership and improving engineering practices
Most importantly, you'll be someone who doesn't need everything mapped out for you. You can work through ambiguity, challenge assumptions, make sound technical decisions and bring stakeholders with you.
A newly created role with genuine technical ownership and influence
Major exposure to Microsoft Fabric and the broader Data & AI transformation
The opportunity to help shape engineering practices and the future data platform
Strong visibility across senior technology, data and business stakeholders
If you're a Senior Data Engineer, Lead Data Engineer or Senior Analytics Engineer looking for an opportunity to have genuine technical influence within a major Data & AI transformation, I'd love to hear from you.
