About One Man Studio
We make videogames. We partner with major AAA teams to help turn creative vision into shipped games.
The Role
We’re looking for a Senior Game Designer to create and implement campaign systems and content for a strategy game. You’ll work closely with design leadership, programmers, content teams and UX to deliver engaging player experiences, from initial design through implementation, balancing and iteration.
This is a hands-on senior role for someone who understands how interconnected systems shape player decisions, can manage large sets of gameplay content, and takes ownership of getting features working well in the game.
The role is fully remote and starts as a contract, with the potential to become a permanent position if you are successful in the role.
What You’ll Do
- Feature ownership: Take responsibility for multiple campaign features, from design and first implementation through testing, iteration and completion.
- Campaign systems: Design and maintain interconnected systems that create meaningful strategic choices and support long-term player engagement.
- Content creation: Build, implement and maintain large sets of gameplay content, including character traits, abilities, units, buildings and progression elements.
- Balancing: Use spreadsheets and data models to balance content, economies and progression, considering how systems interact across different stages of a campaign.
- Systems analysis: Identify exploits, edge cases and dominant strategies, and refine mechanics while preserving meaningful counterplay and emergent gameplay.
- Playtesting & iteration: Use playtests, feedback and available telemetry to evaluate your work, understand problems and make targeted improvements.
- Documentation & pipelines: Create clear briefs, specifications and diagrams, and help maintain content workflows that support consistent quality as the game grows.
- Cross-discipline collaboration: Work with design, code, content and UX teams to keep features aligned with the game’s vision and production constraints. Communicate progress, dependencies and risks proactively.
- Worldbuilding & support: Create content and descriptive text that bring the setting to life, and support less-experienced designers where needed.
Requirements
- Significant professional game design experience, including shipped games and an understanding of development from initial design through release.
- Strong understanding of turn-based strategy games, campaign systems and the relationships between economy, progression, movement and player choice.
- Demonstrable experience owning, implementing and iterating on gameplay features and content within an established production pipeline.
- Strong Excel skills, numeracy and data modelling ability, with experience balancing large sets of gameplay values.
- Ability to analyse complex systems, explain their strengths and weaknesses, and propose practical improvements.
- Experience organising and maintaining large content sets, with attention to consistency, quality and production constraints.
- Clear design documentation and confident use of office and diagramming tools to communicate ideas across disciplines.
- Excellent written and spoken English, including the ability to write concise, engaging content that supports worldbuilding.
- A self-motivated, organised approach to remote collaboration, with clear communication and openness to feedback.
Nice to Have
- At least one shipped title in a Senior Designer position.
- Experience with grand strategy, 4X or real-time strategy games.
- Gameplay scripting experience in Lua, C# or another language.
- Experience with proprietary tools, complex content pipelines or large in-house codebases.
- Modding experience, personal game projects or board game design.
- Experience using telemetry and player metrics to guide design decisions.
- Knowledge of and interest in history, or experience in narrative or AI design.
What Success Looks Like
- Your features reach implementation, improve through iteration and deliver clear, engaging strategic choices.
- Campaign systems work coherently together, with balanced interactions and meaningful counterplay.
- Content remains consistent, maintainable and engaging as its volume grows.
- Your documentation and communication give other disciplines the clarity they need to deliver.
- You take ownership of problems and help the team make reliable progress.
