Senior Backend Engineer

Secfi is building the private wealth stack for employees and executives with equity.

The Problem We're Solving

Private markets are where most wealth is created today, and they're notoriously hard for individuals to navigate. The best financial advice has always been a luxury, reserved for the ultra-wealthy, delivered by private bankers.

Even those who can afford an advisor often find that most have a blind spot when it comes to pre-IPO company equity & stock options. It's a black box for most in the industry.

Meanwhile, startup employees give years of their lives. Intense work, real sacrifice. Then the company finally has its exit, and they get burned. They pay more tax than they need to. They don't have access to private bank liquidity solutions. They mishandle their shares. They can leave millions on the table, on the single biggest financial decision of their life.

We're changing that!

Secfi is putting sophisticated equity strategy in the hands of the people building the world's most innovative companies.

We work with the builders behind the best tech companies on the planet. We're doubling revenue year on year, growing AUM at over 200%, and we're trusted by employees from companies like Canva, Stripe, SpaceX, Databricks and Anthropic.

We're indirectly invested in more than half the IPOs of the biggest tech brands you know, and we help the people who built them with something deeply personal: their finances.

Why Now?

We're at an inflection point. Demand is climbing, and we're expanding fast on all fronts. A great fintech is a strong blend of financial products and technology, and we're pushing hard on each.

The financial products. The financing and wealth platforms that already drive our revenue, with a fast-growing user base. Now we're deepening them. Automating what's still manual, shipping the features that turn a strong business into a category leader. It's the highest-leverage work in the company: every improvement compounds straight to the bottom line.

The technology. Maeve is our agentic financial planner, and it's becoming the interface for everything Secfi does. Not a feature bolted onto the side, but the hub: the connective layer between our financing, wealth and planning products, and the way customers interact with all of it.

We've merged frontier AI with each person's real financial data and our proprietary calculation engines to bring clarity to the most complex decisions someone will ever face. The more context it holds, the better it gets. The Forecaster predicts the future value of private equity, something only investment banks can do today. We're building it for everyone.

This is a genuinely hard space. Many moving parts, uncertain outcomes, probabilistic by nature, where accuracy and trust are everything. Whatever advice we give has to be right, every time.

It's early enough that the biggest problems are still unsolved. The people who join now are the ones who'll solve them.

About The Role

We're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to build the systems behind some of the most consequential financial decisions people ever make.

Let's be straight about what this is, and what it isn't. If you're chasing scale problems - millions of concurrent users, distributed systems at the edge of what infrastructure can handle, this isn't the role. Our user numbers are around 60,000 & growing.

The real complexity here is in the domain and the nature of the problems you’ll need to solve: probabilistic financial modelling, tax logic across multiple jurisdictions reverse engineered into software, forecasting the value of assets that don't have a public price, accessing data that needs to be accurate.

The math is hard. The correctness bar is absolute. Get it wrong and someone makes a life-changing decision on bad information.

You’ll work in a small, tight team. Backend, frontend, design, product. Horizontal structure, high agency, limited overhead. You’ll report to the Head of Product & Technology.

We don’t want someone who waits for nicely packaged work. We want an engineer who goes and understands the world the product lives in. What customers are actually trying to do, why we’re building what we’re building, and what the domain demands. You’ll need to learn the domain deeply enough to have opinions about them. That’s not a side quest; it's the job.

What You’ll Own

Maeve - the agentic hub. Maeve is becoming the interface for everything Secfi does, the layer that connects our financing, wealth and planning products and gets smarter with every user it serves. Built on Bedrock with Claude, model-agnostic, running LangChain and LangSmith. You’ll build the systems that let an AI planner reason over real financial data and our proprietary calculation engines, and be right every time.

The calculation engines. The tax logic, the modelling, the Forecaster. This is the core intellectual property of the company and the hardest code in the building.

Core product surfaces. Our equity planning tools, onboarding and financing flows are used by thousands of people. You’ll build user-facing product, not internal admin panels.

Turning manual into software. Parts of our financing and wealth business still run manually. Underwriting, contracts, advisor workflows. Rebuilding these as proper systems is the highest-leverage engineering in the company. Every improvement compounds straight to revenue.

Knowing whether it worked. We care about impact, not output. You’ll want to know what the thing you built actually did.

Experience You Need

• Strong Python. Someone who builds and ships production services.
• FastAPI, Django or Flask. You’ve worked with Python web frameworks extensively.
• Real product experience. You’ve built customer-facing systems in a core product and had impact on them.
• SQL and relational databases. You know how to model data properly and you understand what the database is actually doing.
• REST API design and build. You’ve designed the contract, not just implemented someone else’s.
• Public cloud. You’ve built and run services in production on AWS or equivalent.
• Technology agnostic. You pick the right tool for the problem rather than the one you already know.
• A track record in unstructured, high-ownership environments. Startup, scaleup, or a larger company that genuinely moves like one. Somewhere you had to work out what mattered rather than being told.
• Proactive about the domain. You’ve shown that you go and understand the problem space, the customers, and why the solution is the shape it is.
• A STEM degree. It doesn’t need to be computer science.

Bonus Points

• You've built with agents. Professionally or personally. We care that you’ve actually done it and show inquisitiveness in the latest technology.
• Startup or scaleup experience. Many hats, real pace.
• A complex or regulated domain - fintech, biotech, security etc. Somewhere correctness mattered and the problems were genuinely hard.
• GraphQL. An understanding is plenty.
• You care about analytics. You measure what you build.

What's In It For You?

You’ll build for the builders. Our customers are the founders, executives and early employees behind the best tech companies on the planet. Canva, Stripe, SpaceX, Databricks, Anthropic. We’re indirectly invested in over half the IPOs you’d recognise. These are demanding, sophisticated people, and you’ll be building something deeply personal for them: their financial lives.

The hardest problems aren't in the infrastructure. They're in the domain. Probabilistic modelling, multi-jurisdiction tax, forecasting private assets, all wired into an agentic product where the answer has to be right every time. If you want a problem that will genuinely stretch you, this is a rare one.

Build agentic AI, properly. Maeve isn't a chatbot bolted onto a website. It's frontier AI wired into real financial data and proprietary calculation engines, doing something nobody has done before.

The ambition is the whole point. We're building the largest investment and advisory platform for the most ambitious and innovative people on the planet. We're at the forefront of pre-IPO tech investing, and AUM is growing at over 200% a year. There's a lot of room to run.

Massive impact, small team. There's no layer between you and the work. What you build ships, and you'll see what it did.

A business that's actually working. We're profitable, self-funded, and doubling revenue year on year. You're building from strength, not sprinting ahead of a runway.

Early enough to matter. We're in the re-acceleration phase. The foundations are built and profitable, and the biggest problems are still unsolved. The people who join now are the ones who’ll define what this becomes.

How we work. Amsterdam office 3 days a week with your product and design teammates. Up to 4 - 6 weeks fully remote a year. Company trips like a fully paid ski trip, hiking in Norway. Lots of autonomy and room to grow, if you deliver. High trust, high standards. We iterate fast, we're not afraid to kill ideas, and we work hard. But we look after our people; this isn't a place that mistakes long hours for good work.
