Build and own backend services for global liquidity management, safeguarding, investment workflows, and cash data management at a fintech payments platform. Work with distributed systems (Kafka, gRPC, microservices) and JVM languages (Kotlin/Java) to ensure funds are available across entities, currencies and jurisdictions.
Airwallex is the AI-native financial operating system for a real-time, intelligent economy. More than 675,000 businesses, including McLaren Racing, Qantas, SHEIN, and TikTok, use us, directly or through our platform partners, to run their financial operations or build and monetize financial products of their own.
We started in Melbourne in 2015 to build the infrastructure global commerce runs on. We're the regulated backbone behind global payments: not by accident, but by design. A decade plus, 85+ licenses, and a financial infrastructure spanning North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.
We're co-headquartered in San Francisco and Singapore, with more than 2,300 people across 27 offices. We hire builders with founder-level energy, people who move fast with good judgment, dig in with real curiosity, and make calls from first principles rather than waiting to be told what to do. Read our operating principles to see it in full.
You’ll design, build and own backend services that help Airwallex manage funds efficiently, securely and intelligently across global entities, accounts and currencies. You’ll build scalable systems for liquidity forecasting, cash positioning, internal fund movement, safeguarding, investment workflows and operational decision-making.

Own services through the full lifecycle, using distributed systems, event-driven workflows, Kafka, gRPC, REST APIs and SQL or NoSQL data stores.
This is an in-office role — you'll be in our Singapore office five days a week.
5+ years of experience building and operating backend systems in production.
Strong programming experience in one or more JVM languages, such as Kotlin or Java, or a comparable backend stack, and a willingness to work primarily in the JVM ecosystem.
A solid understanding of distributed systems fundamentals, including concurrency, data consistency, idempotency, retries, backoff and failure modes in networked services.
Experience designing and working with REST and/or gRPC APIs, and persistence layers using relational databases, such as PostgreSQL, and/or key-value stores.
Proficiency with event-driven architectures and message brokers or streams, such as Kafka or similar technologies.
A strong focus on testing and quality, including unit, integration and contract tests, with familiarity with CI/CD pipelines.
A good grasp of observability, including metrics, logging, tracing and alerting, and how to use them to debug production issues.
Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work comfortably with cross-functional partners in a fast-paced environment.
Experience in fintech, payments, treasury, banking, liquidity management, safeguarding, investment platforms, regulatory reporting or financial data systems.
Experience building systems that require strong auditability, reconciliation, controls, approval workflows or financial correctness.
Experience working with data-intensive systems, cash flow analytics, forecasting, reporting or operational dashboards.
Familiarity with financial operations concepts such as cash positioning, fund movement, bank account structures, entity-level liquidity, safeguarding, investment limits or cash optimisation.
Experience designing platforms that support global operations across multiple markets, currencies, entities or regulatory environments.
You're comfortable owning the roadmap yourself.
You own the outcome and you don't wait for permission to fix what's broken.
You're comfortable with ambiguity. Give you a problem, not a prescription, and you'll run with it.
You hold yourself to a high standard even when no one is watching. Quality and accountability aren't external expectations, they're internal ones.
You value in-person collaboration and are happy being in the office five days a week.
You say what you mean. You're direct, but you lead with respect.
You know when to align and when to just decide. Collaboration isn't a way to avoid accountability.
You connect dots across functions and hold the big picture without losing grip on the details.
Engineering at Airwallex is for people who want to define a category, not maintain one. We're reimagining how businesses interact with finance from the ground up, AI- and agent-native by default, think agent wallets, agentic bookkeepers, and spend-management autopilots, with APIs designed for agents as first-class users. The hard part is trust: building agent-native systems precise enough to move real money autonomously, on top of a decade of real infrastructure. This is a team for engineers who'd rather own an unsolved problem than inherit a mature one. If you want frontier problems, teammates who raise your standards, and a genuine clean slate on world-class infrastructure, this is the place to build it.
