Role Overview
Based out of regional field locations with regular travel, the Safety Inspector is responsible for ensuring work site compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and Local safety regulations as well as all elements of the Wilson safety program. Reporting directly to and coordinating work activities with the Director of Safety, you will collaborate closely with field crews, project management, and regional leadership to foster a proactive safety culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Field Safety & Meetings: Attend morning tailboard meetings to cover daily safety topics, discuss job sites, review incidents, near-misses, and good catches, and set a strong example by following safety practices and proper PPE usage.
- Audits & Corrective Actions: Perform a minimum of one safety audit per crew per day using the SiteDocs app—including thorough site condition surveys and hazard analysis and implement immediate corrective action whenever noncompliance is identified.
- Training & Onboarding: Conduct safety orientations and training for new and returning employees, coordinate new hire drug testing, administer the fall protection program, fit testing, employee training, and equipment certification tracking, and review Zonar/DVIR truck and equipment safety inspection reports.
- Incident Investigation & Reporting: Investigate all incidents and near-miss reports, file required documentation and evaluate the effectiveness and use of Human Performance Improvement (HPI) principles among field employees.
- Leadership & Program Review: Review audit results, accidents, near-misses, disciplinary actions, and field safety suggestions with General Foremen and foremen, and meet periodically with management to discuss safety trends and program improvements.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience Level: Minimum 5 years of experience supporting or leading utility safety programs, including at least 3 years of experience in the high voltage electrical transmission and distribution trade.
- Education & Credentials: Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP) with a background in electric transmission and distribution utility services, current First Aid and CPR certification, and a valid CDL and Medical Card.
- Technical & Safety Skills: Working knowledge of state and federal OSHA laws and regulations, plus the ability to utilize digital safety tools like SiteDocs and equipment inspection platforms.
- Core Competencies: Ability to communicate effectively with various levels of staff and personality types, with a strong desire and ability to learn the technical aspects of our industry.
- Location & Licensing Requirements: Must be able to work outside, travel regularly, and maneuver difficult terrain on job sites.
