Remote Senior DevOps and Systems Engineer in Wateringbury

Job Description

About Us

Snappy Shopper is the UK's fastest‐growing quick commerce (Q‐commerce) platform powering rapid grocery delivery from local convenience stores. We enable independent retailers and major partners, including SPAR, Nisa, Premier, Co‐op and others, to digitally transform their business by offering same‐day and rapid delivery of food, drink and everyday essentials within as little as 30‐60 minutes. Customers on our platform typically spend significantly more online than in‐store, helping retailers grow revenue and deepen community engagement.

We're more than a delivery app, we're a technology partner for local high streets, providing tools for digital sales, marketing solutions, and integrations that help retailers compete with larger online players.

At Snappy Shopper, we're committed to innovation, retail empowerment and community impact, helping stores thrive digitally, offering exceptional local convenience to customers, and shaping the future of on‐demand retail in the UK.

Our location

We are a UK company with colleagues across the country and offices in Dundee and Edinburgh. This is a UK-based remote role, with occasional opportunities to connect with colleagues in person.

About the team

You'll join our Infrastructure team, working closely with Software Engineers and other technical teams to keep the systems behind Snappy secure, reliable and performing at their best.

We're looking for someone with strong, hands-on systems administration experience who has also developed modern cloud and DevOps capability.

You'll be equally comfortable getting under the hood of a Linux production environment as you are working with AWS, Terraform, automation and CI/CD.

About the role

As a Senior Linux Systems & DevOps Engineer, you'll take a hands-on responsibility for running, troubleshooting and improving the infrastructure our platform depends on.

This isn't a role focused solely on cloud provisioning and deployment pipelines. You'll work across Linux systems, web and application infrastructure, databases, networking, AWS and automation, and you'll be expected to investigate problems through the full technology stack when something isn't behaving as expected.

Day-to-day, you will:

• Manage, monitor and improve our production AWS and Linux infrastructure.
• Run and maintain the services our platform depends on, including nginx, Apache, Redis, OpenSearch/Elasticsearch and relational databases.
• Maintain and improve our infrastructure as code, configuration management and CI/CD environment using Terraform, Ansible and Bitbucket Pipelines.
• Manage our CDN and WAF layer across Akamai and Cloudflare.
• Monitor platform health and performance, responding to alerts and identifying opportunities to improve resilience.
• Take ownership of production incidents, troubleshooting across systems, networking, databases and infrastructure to identify root cause and restore service.
• Automate repetitive operational work using Python and Bash.
• Participate in our shared 24/7 on-call rota once fully onboarded.

To be successful, you'll have:

We're looking for someone with genuine systems administration depth alongside modern DevOps capability.

You'll bring solid experience in DevOps, Systems Administration or a similar infrastructure role, with strong hands-on Linux experience in business-critical production environments.

You'll be confident troubleshooting beyond the cloud or deployment layer, working across operating systems, networking, web infrastructure and databases to understand what's actually causing a problem.

You'll also have strong AWS and infrastructure-as-code experience, an automation-first mindset, and the ability to take ownership when production issues arise. You'll be comfortable working independently, making sound decisions under pressure and knowing when to involve others.

Experience across our wider technology stack, including nginx, Apache, Redis, MariaDB/RDS/Postgres, OpenSearch/Elasticsearch, Terraform and CDN/WAF technologies will be important, although we're equally interested in your underlying technical depth and ability to pick up the specifics of our environment.

You'll also need to be comfortable participating in a 24/7 on-call rota.

Experience with Bitbucket Pipelines, Ansible and monitoring tools such as Zabbix, CloudWatch, Pingdom or New Relic would be useful, as would working knowledge of PHP or Node.js and experience within PCI DSS or ISO 27001 environments.

Who you are

• Community: You collaborate and share success with colleagues and partners.
• Be Snappy: You work at pace and adapt to changing priorities.
• Breaking Barriers: You find creative ways to solve problems and open new opportunities.
• Craic on: You enjoy working with a range of stakeholders and bring positive energy to the role.

What's in it for you

Joining Snappy as a Senior DevOps and Systems Engineer means joining a collaborative engineering environment where your expertise genuinely influences how we build, deploy and scale our platform. You'll work on meaningful technical challenges, have the autonomy to improve the systems you own, and play a key role in delivering a reliable experience for retailers and customers across the UK. We offer a competitive salary, flexible remote working and ongoing opportunities for learning, development and career growth.

Applying

We want our recruitment process to give you (and us) a proper opportunity to understand whether the role is the right fit.

Following an initial application review, selected candidates will have a first conversation with our Engineering team to discuss your experience, the role and Snappy's technical environment.

Candidates progressing from there will be invited to a more in-depth technical interview, where we'll explore both your systems administration and DevOps experience in greater detail.

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and are committed to inclusive recruitment.

Please note that due to the volume of applications we receive, we're only able to contact candidates who are selected to progress to the next stage.
