Principal Software Engineer at Yotta Energy – Austin | Jobyssey

About Yotta Energy
AI is driving explosive growth in data center demand, and the electricity grid that powers it is undergoing its biggest transformation in a century. Meeting that demand while accelerating the shift to clean energy will take more than new generation - it will take smarter, more flexible infrastructure that can balance supply and demand in real time.

Yotta Energy is building that infrastructure. We design and deploy the hardware and software behind commercial-scale distributed energy resources (DER), and we're now aggregating that fleet into Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) - networks of batteries and solar assets that act as a single, intelligent resource for the grid. It's a direct, tangible way to support the clean energy transition: turning distributed storage into grid-scale flexibility, unlocking new value for our customers, and helping the grid absorb the load growth AI itself is creating.

About the Role
We're looking for a Principal Software Engineer to provide technical leadership across our platform, from architecture decisions that improve reliability, performance, observability, and security, to hands-on mentorship that raises the bar for the whole team. You'll help design shared services and reusable patterns that keep our products interoperable and consistent, while staying close to the firmware, hardware and systems that make our platform work in the real world.

Key Responsibilities

Lead architectural decisions that improve reliability, performance, observability, security, and operational excellence across our product ecosystem
Be the engineering lead on projects. Working from ideation to implementation to rollout
Architect web, cloud, and device-integrated solutions across our distributed Linux fleet as part of a unified product experience
Design state machines, device controls, command/acknowledgment flows, and fail-safe behavior for connected devices
Build reliable, fault-tolerant systems that gracefully handle connectivity loss, retries, device failures, and offline operation
Conduct design and code reviews
Evaluate emerging technologies and apply them to solve complex business and technical challenges
Mentor engineers and technical leads, and drive adoption of architectural best practices
Collaborate cross-functionally to troubleshoot issues spanning cloud, network, gateway, and device layers

Required Qualifications

10+years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years owning software architecture and distributed systems design decisions at scale

Strong proficiency in TypeScript/Node.js, Python, or Go
Strong knowledge of distributed systems, APIs, networking, concurrency, Linux, and event-driven architectures

Experience managing and troubleshooting distributed fleets of Linux machines
Strong troubleshooting skills across cloud, network, gateway, and device layers
Strong technical leadership, mentoring, and cross-functional communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with React and building complex, stateful web applications
Experience with AWS, cloud-native architectures, serverless, and modern integration patterns
Experience with IoT/edge systems and hardware communication protocols (MQTT, Modbus, or similar)
Experience with Docker, CI/CD, SQL, and time-series/telemetry data
Experience with automated testing, observability, and production deployments
Energy, ESS, solar, inverter, EV charging, DER, SCADA, or industrial IoT experience preferred but not required

Who May Not Be a Fit

Prefer to work independently without collaborating across teams
Struggle with ambiguity, competing priorities, or tight deadlines
Aren’t willing to roll up your sleeves and help wherever needed
Avoid accountability or have difficulty receiving and acting on feedback

What We Offer

Competitive salary up to $175,000 annually, based on experience

Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance

401(k) plan with company match

Paid time off and company holidays

A collaborative, mission driven culture where every team member makes an impact

The opportunity to work on innovative clean energy technology

Career growth and professional development opportunities

Exposure to cutting edge energy storage systems, power electronics, and cloud-connected technologies
