Principal Software Engineer

Are you ready to shape the future of data?

Matillion is the company behind Maia, the AI Data Automation platform.

In the AI economy, demand for data is exploding. Manual data engineering can’t keep up. Maia fixes that by combining 15 years of data expertise with agentic AI to eliminate the manual work that slows data teams down. Organisations like Cisco, DocuSign, and Slack are already using it to deliver real business impact, faster.

We started in Manchester and now we’re global - with teams across the UK, US and India.

We are driven, curious, energetic people who move fast, think big and hold ourselves to a high standard. We’re here to make a dent in the universe bigger than ourselves. And we’re looking for people who want to be part of it.

We are growing our engineering team in India, and we are looking for a Principal Engineer to provide senior technical leadership across our Billing and Hub services. Working from our Hyderabad office, you will be the technical lead for a team of around 10 to 12 engineers, with a primary focus on Billing, and a seat at the table alongside our global community of principal engineers.

This is a hands-on leadership role. You will shape architecture, influence decisions, and work alongside engineers to evolve our services as our product and pricing models grow, while embracing agentic development to build faster and smarter. If you want to own complex, high-impact systems and represent your team in our senior technical forums, we would love to hear from you.

• Providing technical leadership for the Billing and Hub teams, setting direction and guiding engineers day to day.

• Owning the end-to-end design of our billing service, including integrations with finance and CRM systems, subscriptions, entitlements and consumption.

• Representing India in architecture reviews and senior technical forums, influencing decisions and managing dependencies across teams.

• Partnering with Product, GTM and Finance stakeholders to evolve our billing and consumption models as pricing changes.

• Working hands-on with engineers, using AI and agentic tools to build, debug and challenge solutions, and mentoring colleagues to do the same.

• Extensive backend experience in Java and Spring Boot, with a strong product company background.

• Proven system design and architecture skills, with experience leading technical direction at Principal level.

• Experience with billing, subscription or entitlement systems, and a solid understanding of authentication, authorisation and permissions.

• Hands-on experience with AWS, GCP or Azure.

• Practical experience using AI tools in your own development work, or building AI-enabled solutions, and a curiosity about agentic ways of working.
