Van Driver/Pickup Driver- About the Role
We are seeking a reliable and customer focused Van Driver to join our team in Portarlington. This is a hands-on role within a busy builders' merchants’ environment, where you will be responsible for delivering products to customers while supporting the day-to-day operations of the branch.
As a key member of the team, you will help ensure that customer orders are delivered safely, efficiently, and on time, while contributing to the smooth running of the warehouse and yard.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Delivering building materials and products to customers within the local area using the company van.
- Ensuring all deliveries are completed safely, accurately, and in a timely manner.
- Loading and unloading delivery vehicles in line with health and safety procedures.
- Carrying out daily vehicle checks and reporting any defects or maintenance requirements.
- Assisting customers with the collection of goods and helping to load customer vehicles when required.
- Picking and preparing customer orders for delivery and collection.
- Supporting warehouse and yard operations, including receiving and storing stock.
- Working closely with colleagues across transport, warehouse, yard, and sales teams to provide excellent customer service.
- Assisting with stock control activities, including stock takes and cycle counts.
- Maintaining high standards of housekeeping throughout the branch, warehouse, and yard areas.
- Adhering to all company policies and procedures, particularly in relation to health, safety, and safe driving practices.
- Undertaking any other reasonable duties required to support the efficient operation of the branch.
The Person
The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience:
- Full clean Category B driving licence (essential).
- Previous delivery driving experience, ideally within the building materials, construction, or merchanting sector.
- Knowledge of building materials and construction products would be advantageous.
- Experience working in a warehouse, yard, or similar operational environment.
- Forklift experience and/or forklift certification would be beneficial.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- A proactive and positive attitude with a willingness to assist across all areas of the branch.
- Basic computer literacy.
