Payroll & HR Generalist

Full-Time Payroll & HR Generalist at the Italian Centre Shop Ltd. in Edmonton Alberta.

We're looking for the right person—not just the right résumé.

Payroll can be taught.
Policies can be learned.
Systems can be trained.

Who you are is much harder to teach.

At Italian Centre Shop, our Human Resources team exists to help people succeed. We believe HR should be competent and compassionate—balancing compliance with kindness, business needs with employee support, and doing the right thing even when it's difficult.

We're looking for someone who genuinely enjoys helping people, loves learning, pays attention to details, and wants to build a long-term career in Human Resources.

If you're the type of person who catches the mistake no one else notices, enjoys improving processes, asks thoughtful questions, and wants to grow beyond payroll into a broader HR Generalist role, we'd love to meet you.

About the Role

This position starts with payroll as its core responsibility while providing the opportunity to progressively expand into all areas of Human Resources.

You'll become a trusted resource for our leaders and employees while developing experience in areas such as:

• Employee relations
• Recruitment and onboarding
• Benefits administration
• HR compliance
• Performance management
• Policy interpretation
• Workplace investigations
• Employment legislation
• HR projects and continuous improvement

If your goal is simply to process payroll, this probably isn't the right opportunity.

If your goal is to become an exceptional HR professional with payroll expertise as your foundation, you'll fit right in.

You'll Probably Love This Role If You...

• Care about people and naturally treat everyone with respect.
• Believe details matter because employees depend on getting paid correctly.
• Enjoy solving problems and figuring out how things work.
• Like improving processes rather than simply following them.
• Are curious and ask "why?"
• Stay calm when priorities change.
• Can balance empathy with accountability.
• Take ownership instead of waiting for someone else to fix the problem.
• Enjoy learning and continually developing your skills.
• Appreciate working with a collaborative team that genuinely supports one another.

What You'll Be Doing

Payroll

• Process bi-weekly payroll accurately and on time.
• Maintain employee records and payroll changes.
• Ensure compliance with payroll legislation and company policies.
• Reconcile payroll reports and investigate discrepancies.
• Support year-end payroll activities, T4s, ROEs, and government reporting.
• Assist with payroll audits and compliance requirements.

Human Resources

• Support employee onboarding and offboarding.
• Assist with benefits administration.
• Respond to employee questions and provide HR guidance.
• Support recruitment activities.
• Help maintain HR documentation and records.
• Participate in HR projects and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Continue developing your HR knowledge and responsibilities over time.

Qualifications

Required

• Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation (National Payroll Institute)
• Payroll processing experience
• Strong understanding of Canadian payroll legislation
• Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
• Excellent organizational and time management skills
• Strong communication skills
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment
• Genuine interest in developing a career in Human Resources

Highly Preferred

• Experience processing payroll in UKG (Ultimate Kronos Group).
• Experience supporting Human Resources functions.
• Experience with benefits administration.
• Experience in retail, manufacturing, hospitality, or other multi-location environments.
• Working knowledge of Alberta employment standards and HR legislation.

What Success Looks Like

You build trust because people know they can rely on you.

Payroll is accurate.

Employees feel supported.

Leaders know you'll help solve problems instead of creating them.

You continually learn, improve processes, and expand your HR knowledge.

You become someone the organization depends on—not because you know all the answers, but because you're committed to finding them.
