What's the role?
News Corp Australia is seeking an experienced, visionary National Newsroom Innovation Product Manager to drive our editorial R&D agenda.
Sitting at the intersection of emerging technology and high-impact journalism, you will lead the discovery, rapid prototyping, and de-risking of ground-breaking AI solutions. Working alongside our editorial and technical leaders, you will set the benchmark for ethical, scalable, and value-accretive AI tooling across the country’s largest newsrooms.
As a leader of our Newsroom Innovation stream, you will guide ideas from exploratory R&D to validated proof-of-concepts ready for live newsroom adoption.
You will lead our dedicated Innovation squad (including AI Product Manager, Data Scientist and AI / Python Developer, and Editorial specialists) in solving complex, high-velocity editorial challenges. In addition to driving front-end discovery, you will oversee the transition of validated prototypes to the AI Product Manager, ensuring a seamless handover into the live production environment.
This role can be based in any of our head offices across NSW, VIC, SA and QLD (2 days can be worked from home)
Key responsibilities
- Partner with editorial leadership, engineering, and prompt design to translate high-level business and editorial challenges into a concrete, prioritised R&D product roadmap (rolling 8-week and full financial year).
- Lead the end-to-end innovation lifecycle, validating new AI capabilities, LLMs, and emerging technologies through agile prototyping and clear business-case definition.
- Serve as the product authority on model accuracy, hallucination management, and output validation, ensuring every prototype upholds News Corp Australia’s rigorous standards of journalistic integrity.
- Maintain strategic oversight of the complete AI product pipeline. Partner with the AI Product Manager to manage smooth handovers of production-ready prototypes into the BAU maintenance and scaling lifecycle.
- Contribute and produce crisp technical charters, evaluation frameworks, and product briefs that define our technical philosophy and support collaboration with national editorial heads and global technology partners.
- Remove technical and operational blockers across teams, fostering a newsroom-paced delivery culture that balances speed with enterprise-grade reliability.
- Establish clear R&D metrics and leadindicator KPIs to measure prototype velocity, editorial feasibility, and projected business value.
Who are you?
- Proven track record in product management leading 0to-1 innovation, rapid prototyping, or R&D initiatives within media, digital publishing, or high-pace tech environments.
- Strong practical understanding of the modern generative AI landscape, LLM architectures, fine-tuning, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), agentic systems, and prompt evaluation.
- Ability to thrive in a high-velocity, real-time news ecosystem that moves significantly faster than conventional software release cycles.
- Exceptional attention to detail with experience building systematic validation frameworks to test model performance, bias, and output safety.
- High-level gravitas with the ability to bridge conversations between data scientists/prompt engineers and newsroom executives.
- Demonstrated capability in guiding and developing other product professionals, setting high standards for documentation and product craft.
What we offer
- High-profile, strategic leadership role within News Corp Australia’s flagship AI team, with enterprise-wide impact.
- Flexible hybrid working arrangements across our major Australian offices.
- Competitive executive remuneration package with career growth across our national and global networks.
- The opportunity to shape how generative AI elevates world-class journalism.
