Position Summary
The Lead Engineer will be responsible for supporting, maintaining and improving manufacturing equipment with a primary focus on robotic-arm systems and automated machinery. The role requires strong hands-on experience in machine troubleshooting, robotics, mechanical systems, electrical circuits and production-process improvement.
The successful candidate will work closely with Production, Maintenance, Quality, Engineering and equipment suppliers to ensure high machine availability, stable process performance and continuous improvement. Strong communication and coordination skills are essential for resolving technical issues and implementing improvement projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the installation, setup, qualification and improvement of robotic-arm systems and automated manufacturing equipment.
- Troubleshoot machine failures involving robotic arms, sensors, actuators, motors, pneumatic systems, mechanical components and electrical controls.
- Read, interpret and analyse mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, pneumatic diagrams and machine layout drawings.
- Conduct root-cause analysis for machine breakdowns, process abnormalities, recurring defects and equipment downtime.
- Support corrective and preventive actions to improve machine reliability, safety, productivity and process capability.
- Collaborate with equipment suppliers and cross-functional teams on machine modification, repair, upgrading and improvement activities.
- Develop and maintain machine-related documentation, including troubleshooting guides, checklists, preventive-maintenance requirements and operating procedures.
- Support the development and revision of FMEA, Process Management Plans (PMP) and Work Instructions (WI).
- Ensure machine and process changes are properly evaluated, documented and implemented in accordance with engineering and quality requirements.
- Monitor equipment performance and analyse downtime, cycle time, failure trends and recurring machine issues.
- Train technicians, operators and engineers on machine operation, troubleshooting methods and safe working practices.
- Provide technical support during new-machine installation, production ramp-up, process qualification and engineering trials.
- Ensure all machine-related activities comply with safety, quality, environmental and company requirements.
- Promote continuous improvement through automation enhancement, error-proofing, machine optimisation and reduction of unplanned downtime.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation, Manufacturing Engineering or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in process engineering, machine engineering, automation or manufacturing equipment support.
- Strong practical experience with robotic arms, automated machinery and machine-control systems.
- Good knowledge of mechanical assemblies, electrical systems, sensors, motors, actuators, pneumatics and industrial automation.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical diagrams, pneumatic schematics and equipment manuals.
- Strong hands-on troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Experience in manufacturing, semiconductor, electronics, precision engineering or other highly automated production environments will be an advantage.
- Working knowledge of FMEA, PMP, Work Instructions, process control and change-control requirements.
- Experience working with equipment suppliers, contractors and cross-functional engineering teams.
Technical Skills
- Robotic-arm setup, programming support and operational troubleshooting.
- Electrical and mechanical fault finding.
- PLC, sensor, servo, motor and pneumatic-system troubleshooting.
- Preventive maintenance and machine reliability improvement.
- Root-cause analysis and corrective-action implementation.
- Machine capability, cycle-time and downtime analysis.
- Equipment qualification and process validation.
- Technical report preparation and engineering documentation.
- Familiarity with safety interlocks, guarding, emergency circuits and machine-safety requirements.
Communication and Language Requirements
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to explain complex technical issues clearly to operators, technicians, engineers, managers and suppliers.
- Strong coordination, negotiation and presentation skills.
- Fluent in English and Malay.
- Proficiency in Mandarin or Chinese will be an advantage.
- Ability to communicate effectively with local and overseas equipment suppliers and engineering teams.
