About EpochEpoch is a venture-backed technology company on a mission to make agricultural and forestry supply chains transparent and sustainable. We leverage state-of-the-art technologies, including cloud-native earth observation and environmental monitoring protocols to measure and report environmental outcomes in the first mile of agricultural and forestry supply chains. We enable sustainability-backed financial incentives to flow to the producers and aggregators in the first mile, who have the ability to act on curbing deforestation and reducing the environmental impact of the entire value chain. Despite being a young company, we are post-revenue and backed by strategic investors and advisors in our field.
The Opportunity: Building a Robust Data EngineEpoch has built a powerful engine for geospatial data processing and environmental monitoring. Our current engineering strengths lie in backend architecture, cloud-native data engineering, and the core science of ecosystem modeling.
We are looking for an API Engineer to design, build, and maintain robust, scalable, and well-documented APIs that power our internal and external applications. You will be critical in ensuring our complex data is easily accessible and consumable, enabling seamless integration for our front-end and partner systems.
You will work in a tight-knit founding team alongside our CTO (ecosystem modeling, data science), CEO (commercial, strategy), and our Founding Full Stack Engineer (backend, cloud infrastructure). This is a pivotal role with direct impact on our platform's capabilities.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities):- API Development: Design, develop, and maintain high-performance, scalable, and secure RESTful APIs using Python, with a strong focus on FastAPI.
- Data Integration: Build efficient data querying mechanisms from structured databases (SQL and NoSQL) using ORMs and other best practices. Experience with dbt and jinja is a plus.
- Database Management: Work with SQL and NoSQL databases, ensuring data integrity, performance, and scalability.
- Documentation & Standardization: Create clear, comprehensive, and user-friendly API documentation (e.g., OpenAPI/Swagger) for internal and external consumption. Champion API design best practices.
- System Architecture: Contribute to the architectural design of backend systems, ensuring resilience, scalability, and maintainability.
- Strategic Collaboration: Work closely with the front-end team to understand their data needs and provide optimal API solutions. Collaborate with the CEO and CTO to align technical development with business goals.
- Best Practices: Champion backend best practices, upholding high standards for clean, maintainable, and well-tested code.
Who You Are (The Ideal Candidate):- A Seasoned API Builder: You have significant experience in building and maintaining robust backend APIs, with a proven track record of shipping high-quality services.
- FastAPI Expert: You possess strong expertise in Python and specifically with the FastAPI framework.
- Database Master: You have strong experience with both SQL and NoSQL databases, including schema design, query optimization, and data modeling.
- Data Transformation Proficient: You are comfortable working with ORMs for database interaction and have experience with data transformation tools like dbt or similar.
- Documentation Champion: You are passionate about clear and concise documentation and have experience with tools for generating and maintaining API documentation.
- A Modern & Pragmatic Coder: You are proficient with modern AI-powered development tools (e.g., Cursor, GitHub Copilot), understanding how to leverage them to accelerate development while knowing their limitations and when to rely on first-principles engineering.
- Full-Stack Versatility: While your focus is on the backend, you have a strong understanding of how front-end applications consume APIs.
- Domain Interest: You have experience or a strong, demonstrable interest in supply chain management, agri-food tech, or geospatial platforms.
- Collaborative & Driven: You thrive in a fast-paced startup environment, excel at managing ambiguity, and have a proactive, problem-solving mindset. You communicate openly and constructively, with a "fall in love with the problem, not the solution" attitude.
Our Tech Stack Includes:- Front-End: React JS/Native
- Back-End: Python, Earth Engine, Cloud-native geospatial (STAC, COG, Zarr), Xarray, Dask, FastAPI
- Cloud: Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
- Databases: SQL and NoSQL databases
- Infrastructure: Terraform, serverless compute infrastructure, Prefect
- Data: Geospatial and Earth Observation libraries
Why Join Epoch?- Pivotal Impact: Your work will be at the core of our product and central to our company's success and mission.
- Visionary Team: Join a small, highly experienced team of founders and engineers passionate about creating a sustainable future.
- High-Growth Environment: Thrive in a dynamic, high-reward startup with significant opportunities for personal and professional growth into a key leadership role.
