Founding Engineer, BEAMRaiL

Company Overview: We're building modern software for law enforcement. Today, officers spend countless hours navigating fragmented systems and completing administrative tasks. We believe public safety deserves tools that are simple, intuitive, and built specifically for the realities of police work. We're focused on helping agencies streamline critical workflows, improve consistency, and reduce the time spent on paperwork and operational processes. We aim to build the foundational platform that helps law enforcement agencies access information, execute workflows, and operate more effectively across the entire organization.

Our CEO and Co-Founder, Matthew Matos, is a former Cary Police Officer who experienced these challenges firsthand. Our Chairman and Co-Founder, Travis May, is a seasoned tech entrepreneur who was previously co-founder and former CEO of the two biggest data companies created in the last 20 years (Datavant and LiveRamp). Our company is backed by Shaper Capital, Travis’ company, which partners with exceptional founders to build companies that shape the world. In just two years, Shaper has launched six companies that are redefining how data moves across industries — each applying a proven playbook to solve data fragmentation and accelerate innovation at scale.

Role Overview: As a Founding Engineer, you will build the first version of the product, a unified search and knowledge platform with agentic workflow orchestration. You'll work on-site at the design partner police department, understanding workflows firsthand and shipping features based on real officer feedback. Our engineers will embed directly within a police department to co-build technology that solves real operational challenges. We're fast-paced, product-driven, and we hire for three traits: smart, nice, and gets things done.

We're flexible on experience level. We care more about hunger, aptitude, and fit.

You will:

• Build the core platform from the ground up: search infrastructure, API integrations, AI/LLM orchestration, and user interface.
• Embed at the design partner PD to deeply understand officer workflows, pain points, and system architecture.
• Design and implement integrations with law enforcement systems.

What we’re looking for:

• You have 3+ years of experience as a full-stack engineer in B2B SaaS, ideally with heavy AWS exposure and some security/compliance experience.
• You're strong with TypeScript/React, Node, and Python, and comfortable modeling complex domain data.
• You're a strong software engineer who can build full-stack applications. You write clean, maintainable code and work across the stack. You're excited about connecting disparate systems through APIs, webhooks, and data synchronization.
• You're scrappy and resourceful. You ship MVPs, gather feedback, and iterate fast. Done is better than perfect.
• You thrive in ambiguity without detailed specs; comfortable working from product context rather than detailed specs, having shipped features end-to-end (UI, API, infra) for a small team or startup. You talk to users, figure out what they need, and build it.
• You're energized by reducing officer burnout and improving public safety through better technology. You can explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and translate their needs into working code.
• You're energized by the prospect of building a billion dollar business from the ground floor and growing with the company.

Nice to have: Experience with AI/LLM applications, RAG systems, or semantic search. Background in government/public sector technology. CJIS compliance or security-sensitive applications. Previous startup experience.

What We Offer:

• The unique opportunity to build a data company from the ground up.
• A dynamic, fast-paced environment where your impact is immediate and meaningful.
• Competitive salary, equity, and benefits package.
• The chance to work alongside some of the brightest minds in data, venture and entrepreneurship.
