Fiber Design Technician – GIS/CAD
Employment: Full-Time, 40+ hours per week
Location: South Bend/Mishawaka, Indiana – On-site, with limited travel expected
Position Summary
The Fiber Design Technician – GIS/CAD is responsible for the design, preparation, and maintenance of drawings and GIS data for broadband fiber and FTTX projects. This position performs a variety of technical functions, including annotation, GIS and CAD data entry, detail selection, fiber plant design, construction mapping, and as-built documentation.
The Technician will work closely with the Design and Engineering teams to develop accurate, high-quality broadband fiber network designs and ensure project documentation and GIS/CAD records remain current and accurate throughout the project lifecycle.
Position Responsibilities
- Design and prepare drawings and construction maps for broadband fiber and FTTX projects using GIS, CAD, and related design tools.
- Maintain asset and design data by entering as-built information into systems of record in a timely and accurate manner.
- Create, update, and maintain GIS and CAD map layers and associated project data.
- Perform annotation, data entry, detail selection, plant design, and other technical design functions as required.
- Convert digital and paper-based documents and source materials into client-specific GIS, CAD, and other required formats.
- Develop and maintain data used within client GIS and design systems.
- Interpret source documents, including maps, deeds, legal descriptions, easements, and rights-of-way, and accurately incorporate applicable information into project designs and GIS/CAD systems.
- Process and incorporate GPS and field data into project documentation and mapping systems.
- Correct, revise, and update design documents based on field information, engineering changes, and project requirements.
- Review and confirm completion of field revisions and as-built documentation, ensuring records accurately reflect completed construction.
- Prepare, print, organize, and maintain detailed drawings and current print inventories as required.
- Perform quality control reviews of engineering drawings, GIS data, and other project documentation to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with project standards.
- Accurately complete assigned design requirements and project deliverables within established schedules and deadlines.
- Collaborate with the Design and Engineering teams and other project personnel to resolve discrepancies and maintain accurate project information.
- Perform other related duties and technical assignments as needed.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Associate degree in GIS, Geography, CAD, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
- Ability to read and interpret maps, plans, deeds, legal descriptions, rights-of-way, and other technical source documents.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in drawings, mapping, and data entry.
- Ability to organize and manage multiple assignments while meeting project deadlines.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative Design/Engineering team.
- Ability and willingness to contribute the time necessary to meet job requirements, project schedules, and deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with fiber optic, FTTX, broadband, utility, or telecommunications design is a plus.
- Experience working with ArcGIS, AutoCAD, or similar GIS/CAD platforms.
- Previous experience in telecommunications, utility mapping, engineering, surveying, or infrastructure design.
