Experienced software engineer (f/m/x)

Madewithlove is currently looking for a full-time experienced software engineer (f/m/x) who can make complex systems understandable, embraces legacy code and existing teams, loves working according to the latest standards and takes pride in delivering nothing but high-quality code.

We are a 100% remote company from Belgium that helps start-ups and scale-ups in the tech ecosystem grow. In addition to developing high-quality applications, we shape our clients' teams and the way they work. At madewithlove, you will work on projects for Belgian and international clients, collaborating with hybrid teams.

Explore our website to see who we have already worked with and the talented people you will be working alongside. Read all about our company culture and what you get in return for all your hard work.

We specifically encourage underrepresented groups to apply. At madewithlove, we celebrate diversity and promote an inclusive environment where team members from all backgrounds, ages, genders, and sexual orientations feel equally appreciated. To achieve this, we are committed to shaping a hiring process that provides everyone with an equal opportunity to get hired. We all love you, but...

You must live and work between the UTC-01:00 and UTC+03:00 time zones. Since we already have people working in these time zones, extending the time zone further would make collaboration inefficient.

Don't hesitate to apply if you don't fulfil 100% of the requirements. Superheroes don't exist. People with passion and talent do!

People skills

• You protect our company values in and outside the company walls, politely speaking out when they are not followed. You embrace diversity, inclusivity and equ(al)ity.

• You can communicate clearly, taking into account who your audience is. You respectfully push back on unrealistic deadlines and dangerous shortcuts. You can give others honest, constructive and actionable feedback.

• You know where to find information and actively search for it, challenging what you find. You don't hesitate to ask questions because others know things you don't. You document everything, including the why, so that everybody can understand it.

• You land in existing teams to build trust by listening and to deliver value where needed. You mentor and coach to help others see what great looks like.

• You strive to expand your knowledge, both technical and non-technical. You like sharing your knowledge with colleagues and the world through different channels (blogging, presentations, group discussions, etc.).

• You can work independently and efficiently, but also enjoy working in a team environment. You do what you promise, take ownership, and you manage your own time in a flexible environment.

Technical skills

• You have deep expertise in one or more of our core stacks: PHP (mostly Laravel), Python (Django, FastAPI) or JavaScript (React, Next.js). You're comfortable working across back-end, front-end and infrastructure.

• You can take a business problem, talk to stakeholders and own the solution from ideation to release. You engineer products, not tickets.

• You know how to write modern, high-quality code, and you direct agentic coding tools to produce it. You don't ship what you can't defend.

• You deliver at speed by shipping small increments frequently. You run work in parallel, where agentic development allows it.

• You make architecture, infrastructure and technology choices that fit the problem, including at scale.

• You build and maintain the foundations that let both humans and agents move fast without breaking things: quality guardrails (testing, static analysis), delivery pipelines (CI/CD, feature flags) and observability. You turn recurring work into reusable, version-controlled skills and tooling for your agents.

• You're good at software archaeology. You delve into undocumented legacy code to uncover and document the hidden business logic. You migrate codebases piece by piece without stopping the business.

• You leave things better than you found them and drive initiatives to reduce technical debt. You know some debt needs fixing now, and some can wait.

Bonus points

• You have experience in product/SaaS startup and scale-up environments.

• You've done data engineering work: pipelines, warehouses, analytics or machine learning. Our clients increasingly sit on data they don't use, and you know how to change that.

• You enjoy sharing your thinking publicly, whether in writing or on stage.

• You’re contributing or have contributed to open-source software.

What will you be offered?

(People from outside of Belgium will work as subcontractors. People from Belgium will be put on our payroll).

• Remuneration in accordance with the rest of the team and your experience.

• (Real) flexible working conditions tailored to your personal life.

• 25 paid holidays (20 free of choice and the week between Christmas and New Year) + 10 National holidays.

• A yearly company retreat.

• A group of enthusiastic colleagues spread all over the world!

• Ten per cent of your time goes to expanding the company's knowledge, experimenting, or (co-)creating things!

If this sounds like we are talking about you, please don't hesitate to hit the 'Apply' button.

The process

If you pass the CV screening, you will have a first video interview with a non-technical recruiter from madewithlove. The selected candidates will receive a technical challenge. The final round is the interview with the management team of madewithlove.

Good luck!
