This isn't another defense contractor job
Join a mission-focused engineering team developing embedded software and firmware for advanced defense and national security applications. This early-career engineering role is designed for a capable software engineer with a strong foundation in C/C++ who can contribute to embedded systems, work close to the hardware, and continue building technical depth alongside experienced engineers on mission-critical programs.
Why embedded software engineers choose Secmation
- Build embedded software and firmware that support real-world defense and national security missions.
- Work directly with hardware, processors, interfaces, sensors, communications systems, and other embedded technologies in technically challenging environments.
- Collaborate with experienced embedded software, FPGA, RF, cyber, systems, and hardware engineers in a small-team environment.
- Gain exposure to the complete embedded development lifecycle, from requirements and low-level implementation through integration, hardware/software debugging, test, and deployment.
- Take ownership of meaningful engineering tasks while receiving technical guidance and mentorship.
- Work within a small, highly technical company where individual engineers have visible impact.
What you'll do
Develop, integrate, test, and maintain embedded software and firmware supporting defense and national security programs. This is a hands-on engineering role for someone with strong foundational C/C++ skills who is comfortable working close to the hardware, debugging software/hardware interactions, learning within an existing codebase, and solving well-defined technical problems with support from more experienced engineers.
You'll work across:
- Development and debugging of embedded software and firmware using C/C++ for processors, controllers, and embedded computing platforms.
- Low-level hardware interfaces, peripheral interaction, device drivers, and software components that connect embedded hardware with higher-level applications and system functionality.
- Embedded Linux development and troubleshooting, including command-line tools, build environments, system configuration, and application-to-hardware interaction where applicable.
- Hardware/software integration and debugging using laboratory tools, logs, test equipment, and systematic root-cause analysis.
- Unit, integration, and system-level testing to verify software behavior, interface performance, reliability, and correct operation on target hardware.
- Source control, code reviews, issue tracking, documentation, and other established team development practices.
- Collaboration with embedded software, FPGA, hardware, RF, cyber, and systems engineers to understand requirements, interfaces, constraints, and implementation approaches.
What we're looking for
- U.S. citizenship and a current, active DoD Top Secret security clearance are required. Ability to obtain and maintain SCI eligibility may be required based on program needs.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline. Equivalent relevant technical experience may be considered.
- Foundational embedded software or firmware development experience gained through professional work, internships, academic projects, research, or other hands-on technical experience.
- Working knowledge of C and/or C++ and fundamental software development concepts applicable to embedded systems.
- Familiarity with low-level hardware interfaces, device drivers, memory mapped I/O, peripheral interfaces, or interaction between firmware and higher-level software.
- Ability to implement, test, and debug well-defined embedded software or firmware features with technical guidance.
- Familiarity with embedded Linux environments and hardware/software debugging is preferred.
- Experience with AMD/Xilinx SoCs, FPGA-based platforms, or similar programmable embedded hardware is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with Git or another modern source-control system and the ability to follow established coding, documentation, and configuration-management practices.
- Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and willingness to learn new technologies, hardware platforms, and technical domains.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a collaborative engineering team.
- Experience with defense, aerospace, communications, cybersecurity, RF, FPGA, or other mission-critical embedded systems is a plus but not required.
Work Environment
- Hybrid role with on-site work required in Huntsville, Alabama.
- Flexible 9/80 work schedule supporting every other Friday off.
- Work may include collaboration in secure or controlled environments based on program and customer requirements.
Compensation & Benefits
- Competitive salary (based on experience and market conditions)
- Signing bonus
- Company equity
- 9/80 work schedule (every other Friday off)
- Paid time off & flexible work schedules
- Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance
- Life and disability insurance (short & long-term)
- 401(k) retirement benefits with Company Contribution
