Embedded Linux / RTOS Software Engineer
Location: Sterling Heights, MI
Contract: Long-Term, Open-Ended Contract with Potential for Direct Hire
Compensation: $50–$56/hour + PTO, Paid Holidays, and Optional Benefits
Work Arrangement: Hybrid/Onsite — Up to 100% onsite as required
About the Role
Join a team of software engineers supporting the integration and development of vehicle electronic systems. This position will support the Software Loader and Verifier team, contributing to the development, integration, testing, and deployment of embedded software for military ground vehicles.
The ideal candidate will have strong experience with embedded Linux, RTOS environments, C/C++, VxWorks, and low-level system programming, along with the ability to troubleshoot complex hardware/software issues.
Due to the nature of the work, this position may require up to 100% onsite presence in Sterling Heights, MI.
Responsibilities
- Lead activities involving the development, documentation, and maintenance of software architectures, requirements, algorithms, interfaces, and designs.
- Develop and integrate complex software components into fully functional software systems.
- Develop software verification plans, test procedures, and test environments.
- Execute test procedures and document results to verify that software system requirements are met.
- Load software components and images to deploy official software releases in laboratory environments and military vehicles.
- Build and configure VxWorks, Linux, and other embedded operating systems.
- Perform Linux system programming, including device-driver development and new hardware enablement on embedded Linux platforms.
- Integrate software components into build systems.
- Design, develop, test, deploy, maintain, and improve embedded software.
- Support embedded system security through cryptography and secure system architectures.
- Optimize system performance and complex software pipelines.
- Manage individual priorities, deadlines, and deliverables.
- Troubleshoot low-level software issues and distinguish between hardware and software problems.
- Support hardware bring-up and software/hardware integration activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline.
- 5–7 years of relevant software engineering experience.
- Strong C and/or C++ programming experience, including development of maintainable, long-lived codebases.
- Experience with the full software development lifecycle, including requirements, use cases, architecture, design, development, testing, integration, and deployment.
- Strong understanding of asynchronous programming environments involving multiple processes, threads, timers, interrupts, and related concepts.
- Experience working with complex, existing software systems and codebases.
- Experience with safety-critical and/or real-time systems is preferred.
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills.
- Working knowledge of hardware bring-up.
- Experience with Linux system image build tools such as Yocto or Buildroot.
- Experience with Wind River VxWorks and associated debugging tools such as Workbench.
- Experience with Linux system programming, device drivers, bootloaders, memory maps, or other low-level system development.
- Experience with Linux kernel development.
- Experience with Agile development methodologies.
- Experience with GitLab, Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD), and CI agents.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Security & Physical Requirements
- This position may require eligibility to obtain a U.S. security clearance. Non-U.S. citizens may not be eligible to obtain a security clearance.
- Candidate must be able to climb on and off, work in, and work around military vehicles.
- Must be able to pass an Anthropometric Size Requirement (ASR) test for confined-space access.
- Work may take place in prototype shops, laboratories, manufacturing environments, and offices.
- Ability to work overtime as required.
- Previous experience working with ground combat vehicles is preferred.
