DevOps Engineer (Linux, PHP)

Compensation: £35k – £50k

A big hello from the team at Compuco!

At Compuco we empower socially responsible organisations with the digital tools they need to build a better world.

As a data driven creative technology agency, we are passionate about helping non-profit organisations to streamline and reimagine the way they work so that they can focus on impact.

We’re on the lookout for an exceptional DevOps engineer to join our team. Your work will have a significant impact and the role will expose you to working on a range of open-source projects for the not-for-profit sector.

You will be working with other DevOps engineers, but also with PO, development and QA teams, helping to define the deployment tools and processes in Compuco.

We’re a very process-driven team and constantly seek to develop and refine the way we work to ensure that we continue to deliver the highest quality service to our clients and to the sector as a whole. We’re looking for someone with a “can do” attitude to join our growing team.

As a distributed company with an HQ in London and team members from all around the world, one of the things that makes working at Compuco special is the chance to meet and learn from people from an amazing array of nationalities and cultures. We’re extremely proud of the way we work and the open culture we have developed.

Key responsibilities:

1. Develop and maintain production infrastructure and mission-critical systems.
2. Liaise with Development, QA, POs and other stakeholders to be aligned with the needs of the company infrastructure.
3. Stay up-to-date with security best practices and integrate security at every level of the stack.
4. Monitor and troubleshoot infrastructure issues for live environments.
5. Provide infrastructure architecture advice for Compuco development teams.
6. Investigate new infrastructure technology and solutions.

Experience sought:

1. 4+ years’ experience with Linux administration experience.
2. 3+ years’ experience with web server and PHP applications administration (NGINX preferable).
3. 3+ years’ experience with cloud technologies (our stack is mainly AWS), including 2+ years using infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform.
4. 3+ years’ experience with Shell Scripting (Bash / PowerShell preferable).
5. 3+ years’ experience with networking fundamentals (DNS, TLS/certificates, load balancing, VPN/VPC, and CDN/WAF such as Cloudflare).
6. 2+ years’ experience developing automation using Ansible.
7. 2+ years’ experience running containers in production (Docker).
8. 2+ years’ experience with monitoring and observability tooling (New Relic, Grafana/Loki or equivalent), including responding to production incidents — triage, root-cause analysis and post-mortems.
9. 1+ years’ experience operating a container orchestration platform (Docker Swarm; Kubernetes an advantage).
10. Comfortable using AI developer tools (e.g. Claude Code) to accelerate work, with good judgement when reviewing and validating AI-generated solutions, code and configuration before it ships.
11. Good Git skills.

Desirable skills:

1. 1+ years’ CI/CD familiarity (Jenkins / GitHub Actions), including pipeline scripting in Groovy.
2. 1+ years’ database administration experience (MySQL or equivalent).
3. 1+ years’ experience with Drupal administration.
4. Familiarity with Jira or similar tools for project management and issue tracking.
5. Good understanding of Agile methodologies, particularly Scrum, with the ability to work in an Agile development environment.

What we value in this role:

1. Strong collaboration, written and verbal skills.
2. Must love creating awesome documentation!
3. Can do / make it happen attitude.
4. And most of all - you are a team player who likes to collaborate and brainstorm with your team!
