Manage the design phase of design-build construction projects—coordinating internal and external engineering partners, reviewing plans and specifications for cost and constructability, and gating buyouts to ensure no project reaches the field with open scope or unallocated risk.
Nationally Recognized. Midwest Built.
Byrne & Jones Construction is one of the largest construction companies in the Midwest. For 50 years, our asphalt, concrete, microsurfacing, soil stabilization, engineering and design, parks, and sports divisions have built the roads, parking lots, parks, and athletic facilities communities utilize every day — and we self-perform the work other builders subcontract. Our Sports division is one of the region’s largest sports builders, with a portfolio of nationally recognized, award-winning athletic facilities. Proven volume, in-house expertise, and control of the work on the ground let us move fast and make the decisions that protect quality and margin early.
We are seeking a Director of Design Integration to establish and lead the Design Integration function for our Sports, Parks & Design division and manage one of the most vital aspects of each design build project — the design phase, where cost, quality, and risk are determined long before construction begins. This Director will develop the standards, stage gates, workflows, and accountability structure that govern design integration from pursuit through project closeout, while directly leading design integration on key projects.
You will review plans and specifications before they become contracts, identify cost efficiencies while the design can still change, select and manage our external engineering partners, and hold the buyout gate so no project reaches the field with open scope or unallocated risk. Just as importantly, you will build a repeatable Design Integration process that allows Byrne & Jones to apply these disciplines consistently across projects and continuously improve based on lessons learned. It is a senior, high-visibility seat for a professional who knows where margin is won and lost and can build the systems and capabilities necessary to protect it.
What You Will Own
- Design Integration leadership. Establish, implement, and continuously improve Byrne & Jones’ Design Integration standards, processes, stage gates, roles, and required deliverables. Build a repeatable operating model that can be consistently applied across the Division’s project portfolio.
- Design coordination. Serve as the single point of integration across internal engineering, external design partners, and the construction side of the business, from pursuit through project closeout, while establishing the processes project teams will use to perform this coordination consistently across projects.
- Plan and specification review. Review, and establish standards for the review of, every milestone for accuracy, cost, constructability, and quality, and drive conflicts to documented resolution.
- Cost efficiency. Find savings in material and system selection, design alternatives, sequencing, and site and earthwork optimization — and capture them in the buy without compromising quality or safety.
- Constructability and value engineering. Lead constructability, sequencing, and value-engineering reviews with Estimating, Project Management, and Field Operations, and verify accepted ideas make it into the construction documents.
- Budget alignment. Verify at each milestone that the developing design still prices to the contracted amount, and report variance and corrective action to the Vice President. Establish the processes and metrics used to identify and manage design-driven budget variance across projects.
- External design partners. Select architectural, structural, MEP, geotechnical, landscape, and specialty firms; negotiate and administer their agreements and fees. Develop and maintain standards for consultant selection, scope, performance, and accountability.
- Contract risk. Structure design agreements and design build subcontracts so exposure sits with the party performing the work. Partner with company leadership and appropriate risk and legal resources to identify recurring design-related risks and incorporate lessons learned into future contracts and procedures.
- The buyout gate. No project advances to construction without coordinated documents, closed scope, and a validated buy. Establish and enforce the criteria and documentation required to pass this gate.
- Permitting and compliance. Keep permitting on schedule and deliverables compliant, working with internal and external engineering partners.
- Handoff to the field. Deliver a documented design-to-construction handoff, then serve as the design point of contact for changes, submittals, and AHJ issues through closeout. Establish a consistent handoff process so Operations understands the design intent, remaining risks, commitments, and assumptions before construction begins.
- Technology and design collaboration. Establish how BIM, VDC, document-control, and other design collaboration tools are used within the Design Integration process, working with internal and external technical resources as appropriate.
- Lessons learned and continuous improvement. Capture design-related issues, changes, claims, scope gaps, cost impacts, and successful practices from completed projects and translate them into improved standards and processes for future work.
- Performance measurement. Develop practical metrics for evaluating the effectiveness of Design Integration, including design-driven cost variance, scope gaps, consultant performance, design-related changes, schedule impacts, and value created through design optimization.
- Training and organizational capability. Develop the Design Integration capabilities of Byrne & Jones’ estimating, project management, engineering, and operations teams. Create and deliver training, tools, and guidance that allow project teams to execute the established process consistently.
What You Bring
- Experience. Ten or more years across design and construction, including responsibility for coordinating design disciplines on design build or alternative delivery projects, paired with real field experience. Experience establishing or improving design-management processes, standards, or organizational capabilities is strongly preferred.
- Leadership. Demonstrated ability to build a function, establish standards, influence across organizational boundaries, and lead teams through changes in process and accountability.
- Project management. Large-scale construction projects, generally $5 million or greater.
- Partner management. A track record with external engineering consultants — selection, scoping, fees, and deliverables.
- Technical depth. The ability to read, interpret, and cost civil, structural, and specialty construction documents, and to spot the scope gap before it becomes a contract.
- Education. A bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Engineering Management, or a related field, or equivalent experience. PE license and DBIA certification preferred.
- A plus. Sports facility, specialty surfacing, or site and earthwork design build background.
What We Offer
- Base salary. $120,000 to $180,000, based on experience.
- Profit sharing. Additional earning potential tied to company and individual performance.
- Health coverage. Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance.
- Retirement. 401(k) with company match.
- Time off. Paid time off and paid holidays.
- Professional development. Training and support for continuing education and certification.
- Stability. A privately owned company that has grown across the Midwest for 50 years.
- Core values, lived. Be an expert. Do the right thing. Preserve reputation. Do whatever it takes. Have mutual trust and respect.
- Real authority. Direct access to division leadership and high-profile projects that impact communities, with the mandate to establish and lead the Design Integration function.
