About the practice
A career is shaped by more than the projects you work on. It is shaped by the people around you, the feedback you receive, the conversations you are of and the opportunities you are trusted with.
Grimshaw is an award-winning practice with an international footprint. Known not just for our landmark designs, we have built a reputation for our convivial and democratic studio environments: we actively encourage creativity and innovation from every member of staff. We are globally connected, with over 500 employees across 7 studios worldwide.
Our Sydney studio is connected to a global practice working across architecture, infrastructure, transport, workplace, education, culture, and city-shaping projects. We are looking for a BIM Coordinator who is eager to contribute to a collaborative and forward-thinking studio environment. We want our people to be fulfilled and to grow during their time with us—the key to our continuing success is working with and engaging the most talented people we can find.
Role purpose
Support project architects by translating their design concepts and instructions into coordinated architectural Revit models and drawing packages. Prepare, develop and revise architectural documentation for design development, approvals, tender and construction, as required by each project. Coordinate BIM information and multidisciplinary inputs to support accurate, consistent architectural drawings and construction details.
Key responsibilities
· Prepare and revise architectural plans, elevations, sections, construction details and schedules from architects’ sketches, design concepts, mark-ups and project requirements using Revit and associated drafting tools.
· Develop architectural models and working drawings under the direction of the project architect, incorporating approved design changes and maintaining consistency between models, drawings and schedules.
· Interpret architectural and consultant drawings, project specifications and applicable building codes and standards when preparing documentation; refer design or compliance questions to the project architect.
· Coordinate architectural documentation with structural, services and other consultant models; undertake clash detection and QA/QC, and incorporate agreed resolutions into architectural models and drawings.
· Manage architectural Revit models, linked models, shared coordinates, model federation and BIM content to support reliable drawing production and coordinated project deliverables.
· Develop and maintain project BIM Execution Plans, documentation standards and information deliverables in consultation with project leads, supporting consistent architectural model and drawing preparation.
General responsibilities
· Liaise with architects, consultants, builders and contractors to clarify documentation requirements and resolve drawing and model discrepancies; update documentation to reflect agreed project decisions.
· Check drawing accuracy, dimensions, annotations, references and model data, and maintain drawing revisions and issue records in accordance with project procedures.
· Support project teams with day-to-day BIM troubleshooting, architectural Revit modelling, family creation and workflow optimisation associated with documentation delivery.
· Provide technical guidance and training on Revit, Revizto, Rhino and BIM 360/ACC to support architectural modelling, documentation and project coordination.
· Support other BIM and documentation team members and contribute to studio and global Design Technology standards, training, knowledge sharing and workflow improvements.
· Participate in project BIM and documentation meetings with internal and external stakeholders, communicating coordination issues and agreed documentation actions.
Skills and experience
· Relevant qualification in architectural drafting, building design, architectural technology or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant practical experience. A relevant AQF Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree, or a higher relevant qualification, is desirable.
· Minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience in architectural drafting, Revit modelling and BIM coordination within an architectural practice or BIM consultancy working on complex multidisciplinary building projects.
· Demonstrated ability to prepare and revise architectural plans, elevations, sections, construction details and schedules from architects’ design concepts and instructions.
· Sound knowledge of architectural construction documentation, building materials and construction methods, and applicable Australian building codes and standards.
· Advanced knowledge of Revit, BIM coordination, model federation, clash detection and BIM QA/QC processes, including maintaining consistency between architectural models and drawings.
· Strong understanding of BIM standards and ISO 19650, including BIM Execution Plans, information requirements and project deliverables.
· Experience coordinating architectural documentation with architects, clients, consultants, builders and contractors, and communicating technical drafting and model issues clearly.
· Proficiency in Rhino and Revit interoperability, with knowledge of Dynamo, Grasshopper, Python, C# or Revit API considered advantageous.
· Strong communication, training and problem-solving skills. Highly organised and adaptable, with the ability to manage competing documentation priorities, learn new technologies and improve BIM workflows.
Development and benefits
We support growth through cross-studio exposure; mentoring and professional development; CPD and training opportunities; Cities Talks, artist and design presentations; ongoing feedback and development conversations; parental leave and an employee assistance program; and an active calendar of social and cultural events.
