The Automation Engineer II carries significant manual testing responsibility while playing a key role in building out the team's test automation practice using TypeScript and Playwright. The Automation Engineer II works independently, designs test strategy for complex features, mentors Automation Engineer I team members, and drives the transition from manual-only regression coverage toward a scalable automated testing framework integrated into the CI/CD pipeline.
Responsibilities
- Design, execute, and maintain comprehensive manual test plans and test cases for complex features, integrations, and end-to-end workflows
- Own functional, regression, integration, and exploratory testing efforts for assigned products or modules, working with minimal oversight
- Design, build, and maintain automated test scripts and frameworks using TypeScript and Playwright, prioritizing high-value regression coverage
- Integrate automated test suites into CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Jenkins) to support continuous testing
- Define test strategy and acceptance criteria in partnership with product managers and engineering managers during backlog refinement and sprint planning
- Identify, triage, and manage defects through resolution, including root cause discussions with engineering
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to Automation Engineer I team members, reviewing their test cases and early automation contributions
- Perform API testing and backend data validation, including writing and executing SQL queries against test databases
- Evaluate and recommend testing tools, frameworks, and best practices to improve QA efficiency and coverage
- Report on test coverage, quality metrics, and release readiness to QA management and cross functional stakeholders
- Support production releases, including risk assessment, regression sign-off, and post-release validation
- Contribute to the long-term roadmap for shifting the team from primarily manual testing to a hybrid manual/automated testing model
Required Skills/Abilities

Education and Experience
- 2-5 years of experience in software quality assurance, including significant hands-on manual testing experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- Hands-on experience with, or strong working knowledge of, TypeScript and Playwright (or comparable automation frameworks such as Cypress or Selenium WebDriver), with demonstrated ability to ramp quickly on Playwright/TypeScript specifically
- Experience designing test plans and test strategies for complex, multi-system features
- Experience with API testing tools (e.g., Postman, REST clients)
- Experience with bug tracking and test case management tools (e.g., Jira, TestRail, Zephyr, Xray)
- Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, Jenkins)
- Experience in financial services, lending, or mortgage/home equity technology environments
- Experience establishing or scaling a test automation practice from a primarily manual QA function
