We are seeking a highly independent technical innovator who thrives in ambiguity, enjoys solving complex business problems, and can transform ideas into scalable solutions. The role is best suited for someone who wants to be given a business problem rather than a task list.

As a member of the Innovative Core Solutions team within Research & Development, you will partner directly with scientists, technical writers, and business stakeholders to design, build, and implement automation and data-driven solutions that improve how scientific product information is created, managed, and delivered.

Unlike many engineering roles, there is no ticket queue dictating daily priorities. Success in this position requires the ability to identify opportunities, conceptualize solution strategies, independently drive development efforts, and collaborate closely with end users to ensure meaningful adoption and business impact.

This role sits at the intersection of data engineering, solution architecture, process automation, software development, and scientific informatics. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable discussing workflow challenges with scientists, designing scalable technical solutions, and developing production-ready tools that improve efficiency and data quality across the organization.

Initially, project work will focus on modernizing and automating the systems used to generate customer-facing scientific content and product labels. Over time, responsibilities will evolve as new opportunities emerge, requiring creativity, adaptability, and a passion for continuous improvement.

This position serves as a technical leader responsible for transforming complex processes into streamlined, scalable solutions that reduce manual effort, improve data integrity, and enable the organization to operate more efficiently. This position requires creativity, curiosity, strong technical breadth, and the confidence to create direction where ambiguity exists. A successful candidate will not simply execute predefined requirements. They will work with stakeholders to uncover needs, define solution approaches, establish technical direction, and drive implementation from concept through adoption.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Partner directly with scientists, technical writers, and business stakeholders to identify pain points and transform ideas into impactful technical solutions.
• Independently identify opportunities for automation, process improvement, and data optimization without relying on assigned task queues or predefined requirements.
• Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) for data architecture, standardization, automation, and content generation workflows.
• Design, develop, and implement end-to-end solutions that improve user experience, reduce manual effort, and increase operational efficiency.
• Proactively identify high-impact opportunities where automation, software development, analytics, or process redesign can improve business outcomes.
• Clean, validate, standardize, and manage product data and metadata used to generate customer-facing scientific content and product labels.
• Develop and optimize data pipelines, automation workflows, and content generation processes to improve consistency, scalability, and accuracy.
• Architect and enhance solutions leveraging a custom SQL database and VB.NET platform while identifying opportunities for modernization and increased automation.
• Collaborate closely with end users throughout the solution lifecycle, from concept and design through deployment, adoption, and continuous improvement.
• Eliminate redundant data entry, reduce user-generated errors, and strengthen data integrity across interconnected systems.
• Apply scripting, software development, data engineering, and automation technologies to solve evolving business challenges.
• Lead initiatives that improve data flow, establish best practices, and create scalable frameworks that can be leveraged across multiple teams.
• Evaluate complex business challenges and architect innovative technical solutions in the absence of predefined requirements.
• Support new product launches by ensuring data readiness, standardized workflows, and accurate generation of scientific content.
• Own projects from concept through implementation, driving strategy, execution, stakeholder engagement, and measurable business outcomes.
• Adapt to changing priorities and emerging opportunities, taking on new technical challenges as organizational needs evolve.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

• Critical to success: Ability to independently define technical approaches and convert loosely defined business challenges into actionable solutions.
• Strong software development experience with object-oriented programming, including VB.NET, C#, Java, Python, or similar languages.
• Hands-on experience with Oracle SQL (PL/SQL) or other relational database technologies such as PostgreSQL, SQL Server, MySQL, or SQLite.
• Experience with big data and designing, building, and maintaining scalable data pipelines and data integration solutions.
• Proficiency in Python and/or R for data transformation, automation, analytics, and solution development.
• Experience developing solutions on cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.
• Experience with workflow automation and low-code platforms such as Microsoft Power Platform (Power Automate, Power Apps, Power BI).
• Strong understanding of data architecture, data quality, governance, and system integration principles.
• Experience owning projects through the full solution lifecycle, including requirements gathering, architecture, development, deployment, and long-term support.
• Demonstrated history of independently driving projects from concept to implementation with limited direction.
• Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and systems-thinking capabilities.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable insights for diverse audiences.
• Experience working in environments where priorities evolve and solutions often require creativity rather than predefined requirements.
• Ability to balance business needs, user experience, technical constraints, and long-term maintainability.
• Familiarity with Agile methodologies, DevOps practices, and CI/CD frameworks.
• Knowledge of biology, chemistry, bioinformatics, scientific instrumentation, or experience supporting scientific organizations is highly desirable. Experience with flow cytometry is a plus.

WHAT WILL MAKE YOU SUCCESSFUL

You enjoy solving problems that do not have predefined answers.

You are comfortable operating independently and creating structure where none exists.

You are energized by building new capabilities rather than maintaining existing processes.

You naturally identify inefficiencies and take initiative to improve them.

You can move seamlessly between strategy discussions, solution architecture, software development, and end-user collaboration.

You thrive in environments where each project presents a new challenge and no two months look exactly alike.

You often find yourself asking "why are we doing it this way?" and proposing better alternatives.

You view ambiguity as an opportunity rather than an obstacle.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's Degree or Master of Science in Data Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline.

Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience designing, developing, and implementing data, software, automation, or digital transformation solutions.

Experience leading technical initiatives with significant autonomy and ownership strongly preferred.
