About us
Southern Cross Health Insurance is shaping a healthier Aotearoa New Zealand. Our purpose is simple: empowering our members to live well for longer. We're here to give peace of mind through timely access to quality care, inspire healthier living, and lead positive change across the health system. As a New Zealand-owned, member-based organisation, we're building a future where wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do -- delivering exceptional value for our members and creating an environment where our people thrive.
Now is an exciting time to join us. You'll be part of a high-performing, values-driven team where people are at the heart of everything we do -- and in return for your talent, you'll have the opportunity to grow, make an impact, and be proud of the difference your work makes.
About the role
Southern Cross is guided by purpose, powered by people and technology. We’re here to help almost one million members across Aotearoa New Zealand live well for longer - work with real scale, real responsibility, and a real opportunity to make a meaningful difference.
As we grow to be about assurance as well as insurance - a more proactive partner in our members’ health - we’re building a new Data & AI function from the ground up. We’re looking for an Analytics Engineer to help build the trusted, well-modelled data that everything else in the function depends on.
This is a technical role for someone who wants to get hands‑on with how data flows through an organisation: building the models, applying good engineering practice, and turning raw data into datasets people can trust and act on.
About the role
Reporting into the Innovation & Advanced Analytics Lead, you’ll design, build and maintain the dbt models that transform raw data into the analytics‑ready datasets the business runs on - the layer between the data warehouse and the people who use it every day.
You’ll work closely with data engineers to structure source data effectively, and with analysts and business stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver fit‑for‑purpose solutions - supporting Power BI and other reporting tools with curated, governed datasets.
This function is still being built, so you’ll help embed good practice as it grows - testing, documentation, lineage and code review - while exploring new capabilities across Snowflake, dbt and the wider modern data stack.
What you’ll do
- Design, build and maintain analytics data models using dbt and Snowflake
- Develop incremental and dimensional models that are scalable, performant and easy to understand
- Apply software engineering practices, including Git, code reviews, CI/CD and automated testing
- Monitor data quality and investigate issues to keep our data assets trusted and reliable
- Optimise Snowflake storage and compute usage to balance performance and cost
- Create and maintain documentation, metadata and lineage for data products
- Collaborate with data engineers to ingest and structure source data effectively
- Partner with analysts and business stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver fit‑for‑purpose solutions
- Support Power BI and other reporting tools with curated, governed datasets
- Build trusted data products that power advanced analytics and AI solutions
What you’ll bring
- Experience building and maintaining analytics solutions using Snowflake and dbt, or other equivalent tools
- Strong SQL skills and a solid understanding of data modelling principles, including dimensional modelling and medallion architecture
- Experience with Git-based development, CI/CD and software engineering practices
- The ability to translate business requirements into scalable, reusable data products
- Strong problem‑solving skills and attention to detail
- A curious, continuous‑learning mindset - always looking to improve quality, speed and simplicity
- A collaborative style that values knowledge sharing and team success
- Commitment to quality, documentation and operational excellence
- The ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical audiences
