Position Summary
The Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer serves as a senior technical leader responsible for designing complex mechanical systems, automation equipment, and gaging solutions. This position provides technical direction on assigned projects/jobs, coordinates cross-functional efforts, and maintains project ownership from concept through completion. When checking, you must ensure dimensional accuracy, proper tolerance stack-up, and overall gage functionality while supporting the development and guidance of the engineering employees.
Design Engineer Primary Responsibilities
Serve as lead designer on assigned projects, providing technical direction, coordination, training, and mentorship to designers and developing design engineers.
Apply advanced mechanical design expertise in automation systems, machinery, work holding fixtures, gages, material handling systems, vision systems, sensors, instrumentation, and power transmission components.
Utilize comprehensive knowledge of GD&T, manufacturing processes, safety, ergonomics, engineering technologies, and controls integration to develop effective design solutions.
Develop innovative designs using engineering judgment, established standards, and proven company design practices.
Evaluate new concepts and technologies to improve product performance and customer solutions.
Guide Detailers to ensure design intent, accuracy, and project requirements are properly executed.
Create and maintain 3D machine and equipment designs based on project specifications, concepts, and customer requirements.
Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and vendors throughout the design, build, and validation process.
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance engineering efficiency, quality, and design performance.
Checker Primary Responsibilities
Review detail and assembly drawings for accuracy, completeness, and functionality.
Verify dimensional integrity, GD&T application, tolerance stack-ups, and adherence to customer requirements, including R&R objectives.
Ensure compliance with drafting standards, engineering practices, and design intent.
Review bills of material for proper component selection, accuracy, and identification of long-lead purchasing requirements.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED.
Seven to Ten (7-10) + years of mechanical engineering or design/checker experience and at least ten (8) years of manufacturing exposure and/or experience (preferably but not limited to gages and inspections of fixtures and machines
3D Machine & Automation design experience with Autodesk Inventor (preferred) or Solid works. Gage design experience is a plus
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Advanced knowledge and application of GD&T.
Strong leadership, coaching, training and mentoring skills.
Knowledge of gear manufacturing, terminology, and design principles.
Understanding of reliability and maintainability practices.
Proficiency in AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, and Microsoft Office.
Strong organizational and time management skills.
Cost-conscious with the ability to work within budget constraints.
Self-motivated, innovative, and adaptable to new challenges.
